tudent travelers took to the air Ninety-two juniors and seniors and their five chaperones traveled eastward on the annual Washing- ton - New York Trip. From June 8 -16, the group toured the East. Some ofthe highlights of the trip were Mt. Vernon, the Boardwalk, and Greenwich Village. While the group was in Washington, D. C., they witnessed Senator Robert Kennedy's funeral motorcade. Thanks to the introduction of air travel between St. Louis and Washington, the travelers were able to spend more time sightsee- ing. Sixteen Springfield Coeds em- barked on a trip to Mexico on Au- gust 8. Leaving from St. Louis, the group flew to Mexico City where they spent 4 days visiting such places as the National Palace and sidewalk markets. One day was spent in Taxco tSilver Cityl and the next two days in the exciting city of Acapulco. l'm a lonely little petunia in an onion patch! Freshmen and sophomores were officially welcomed to Springfield high Orientation was held for incom- ing Freshmen and Sophomores on August 27 and 28 from 9:30 to 11 :OO A.lVl. Junior and Senior members of Student Council and other volun- teers led the grand tour of the school. The new students were shown their homerooms and given a chance to run through their schedules. lVlr. Frank and Mr. Hott spoke of Underclassmen explore the new gym. l8 opportunities offered at S.H.S.g and Mr.Hottexplainedtheroom-number- ingsystemandproperconduct.Each counselor spoke to the new stu- dents, welcoming them and giving them ideas on what to expect dur- ing their years at S.H.S. Representatives from each of the four service clubs spoke about what their clubs had done in the past and their future plans. And now to face the freshmen! 2 7 r M
