Mrs. Haaker, the librarian, Mrs. Poiriez, her assis- tant, and ten student assistants worked hard handling the 8,000 books and magazines and assisting the stu- dents. The library this year added 500 new books and ten new magazines, including three English publications. Of the three latter, the English mag- azine, Punch, has had surprising popularity among the students. Five individual study carrels, booths for private studying or read- ing, were brand-new accessories in the library this year. New book stacks had been added to enable library personnel to give better service to the students. 27 if l

The traditional algebra and geometry courses pro- vided a basic training in advanced mathematics, While the accelerated classes in college algebra, analytic geometry, trigonometry, and statistics stressed the theory and modern con- cepts of mathematics. Analytic ge- 28 ometry and calculus were honor courses offered only to seniors. The National Mathematics Exami- nation Was administered to all stu- dents enrolled in accelerated pro- grams and any other who wished to take it. Scores were based on a tabu- lation of results over the entire nation. Top-ranking students from SHS were recognized at an assembly at the end of the year. Carl Windisch William Bauer
