English Department Infzfodzzaecz' zfogmmmwl earning In the English curriculum, students were offered a Wide diversity of courses in the fields ofspeech, drama, journalism, and basic English. Soph- omores began their training with a grammar review and a study of the types of literature rather than a par- ticular area ofliterature. juniors were required to do a great deal of reading combined with the study of American Literature in con- nection xvith their study of linguistics. Also, at the junior level, programmed learning was initiated. This involved the extensive use of audio-visual equipment. An innovation was made in the senior English curriculum this year when English Literature was substi- tuted for American Lit. Also, in the realm of electives were courses in NVorld Literature and Creative Writ- ing, designed primarily for students with special abilities in this field. As in previous years, an advanced placement course was available to seniors who wished to increase their knowledge in preparation for college work.
