Industrial arts is a study of man's ettort to change raw materials to a form of higher value, and ot the problems of life related to these changes. In general, industrial arts may be said to: IU furnish training in 'unspecialized practical activities, and, C21 give a certain amount of concrete insight in the na- ture ot tools, machines, forces, appliances, raw materials, and processes. Since modern environment is so highly industrialized, and the processes, ma- terials, and products of industry play such an important role in modern liv- ing, industrial arts is essential to the education of all youth. Its function in the curriculum is to deal with these processes, materials, and products of in- dustry so that the pupils will come to understand the industry to the extent that they will be able, now and in later life, to deal with it intelligently and effectively. Our teachers partici- pate in National Science Foundation Institutes and also help the students to richer experiences through the Science Seminars. The department is one of the few in Illinois that offers botany, physiology, and zoology as individual courses.
