il I I LEWIS STRIEBECK, JOYCE ANKENY I ,I I I I I OVERSEAS MATES Joyce: Norway is a country noted for its beautiful scenery. I was fascinated by the glittering fjords and massive mountains which are unlike anything I had ever seen. In addition to a lot of walking, I spent much time fish- ing, boating. swimming, and sightseeing in this land of contrasts. The modern facilities found in my city homes in Os'o and Bergen are a far cry from the primitive huts in the mountains, and the crowded city streets are certainly a change from the steep mountain trails acces- sible only on foot. Norway is a truly friendly country, and even if l had wanted to try, it would've been hard to escape the Norwegian hospitality which is everywhere, Lewis: Denmark is a picturesque country, generally flat with an occasional series of hills. Red tile or thatch roofs are visible from a distance. Under one of these red tile roofs I spent the first month with the Johannes I-lansens, a farm family of southern Denmark. Some of the foods that took me by surprise in my first home were fried eel, cold bacon in three-quarter slices, cold potatoes for breakfast corn flakes and raw oatmeal. My second fam- ily, the Knudsens, lived on the peninsula of Jutland in northern Denmark. The family was comprised of Mr, and Mrs. Knudsen and Ole, aged nineteen. Needless to say, I had enjoyed myself during my stay in Denmark, The thirty-two AFSers who stayed in Denmark spent the last week in Copenhagen together, a wonderful ending to a wonderful summer.
