IN MEMORIAM WILLIAM C. SPENGLER I932-I956 Thanksgiving morning brought to SHS students and faculty bitter news of the untimely death of Mr. William C. Spengler, instructor in the mathematics department. A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Speng- ler was graduated from Illinois State Normal Univer- sity, and came to SHS in September. Even in the brief time he was with us, his Christian ideals and principles deeply affected those of us who knew him. As advisor to our Youth For Christ Club, he provided inspiring leadership, as originator of the chess movement, he stimulated enthusiasm for intel- lect and sportsmanship. His life on earth was short: twenty-four yearsg yet, in those brief years, Mr. Spengler attained more spirituality and wisdom than many of us will ever as- sume. ISABEL FOGARTY 'I897-1956 During the Christmas holidays, Springfield High School lost a devoted friend and beloved teacher, Death took Miss Isabel Fogarty on Christmas Eve after a brief illness. Miss Fogarty, a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and Trinity College, was an active worker for her Church. She was a member of the English department at SHS for thirty-five years, and in this long period of service, won respect and admiration for her friendli- ness, sense of humor, and deep-seated interest in her students. As an instructor and friend, she will always be missed: but the high ideals she stood for will remain with the thousands of students Miss Isabel Fogarty has taught. 24
