DEDICATION We affectionately dedicate the i957 Capitoline to Miss Mary Virginia Lamson. As an English instructor at Springfield High School, Miss Lamson teaches with compre- hensive vision and warm animation. Because she respects the ideas and opinions of her stu- dents, an atmosphere of friendly co-operation and mutual respect prevails in her classroom. Miss Lamson is active also on an executive committee of the National Council of Teachers of English. As the adviser of the Springfield High School newspaper, Miss Lamson has helped The Senator Speaks, now completing its second year of publication, to struggle to its feet and take its first steps forward. While she instructs the student staff in the principles of good journalism, she encourages originality and the expression of student opinion. As a helpful friend of SHS students, Miss Lamson is always willing to take time out from her busy schedule to sympathize with a stuclent's problems or successes. Her sense of humor is a source of delight to students, who stand in wide-eyed awe of the vast range of vocabulary she employs in conversation. With a poet's perception, she is alert to beauty in its many forms, whether expressing her concern for the crocuses nipped by a hailstorm, or regarding with pride her l94O Chevrolet, Ebeneezer. As a member of her church and community, Miss Lamson takes an active part and works sincerely to support her ideals. Her moral standards and her belief in personal integrity set a high example for her students. She guides her students to be better citizens and better peo- ple individually by teaching them to form their own opinions intelligently, to support and work for convictions they believe to be right, and to change opinions that they know to be wrong. With respect and gratitude, we dedicate this i957 Capitoline to Miss Mary Virginia Lamson. 8 it l

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL JOHN TURNER lO PRINCIPAL This has been a pleasant year as far as student-faculty relationships are concerned. The Student Council and Senior Class have set a good ex- ample in school citizenship. The Student Council has worked with in- stead of against the school adminis- tration. Student activities have been numerous and more careful planning has resulted in less friction and bet- ter results. Next year the transition to a sen- ior high school begins. Our fresh- man class will drop from our present 500 to a little over ZOO. The deci- sion of the Board of Education not to use Old Central as a junior high will enable the eighth graders in Cot- tage Hill, Douglas, Dubois and Hay- Edwards to attend SHS next fall. Per- haps by the following year the two new junior high schools will be com- pleted on the west side and our tran- sition to a senior high status will be complete. ROBERT FURRY
