256.3164 fi... About the tum of the century. gaping spectators first viewed the first flickering and blurred motion pictures on a screen. Due to the work of such pioneers in the in- dustry as Desvignes. Muybridge. Marvey. Edison and Ienkins. who. finally collaborating with Armat. discovered the principle of the modern proiector, this great boon to mankind got its foundation. Within about 20 years. when the silent picture was just becom- ing a masterpiece of science and art, the industry was revolution- ized by the appearance of the sound picture. Sound pictures are an outgrowth of the experiments conducted by the Bell Telephone Laboratories. ln 1926 Don Iuan , a film with musical accompani- ment was shown, and the follow- ing year the Iazz Singer . a full length film with music and dia- logue marked the beginning of a new era in the motion picture in- dustry. Since then rapid strides have been made in the improvement of the machining for picture produc- tion. Today the movie picture is a thing of fine entertainment and education. Millions of people the world over receive a liberal edu- cation while in attendance at the cinema. We learn of people in other lands and see history mak- ing events that have iust occurred. In our own high school moving pictures have become an integral part of our curriculum in aiding to clarify subiects. The aim of the present day producer is to make the audience conscious only of the glamour behind the picture. But through the generosity of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and War- ner Brothers Studios, we are priv- ileged to reveal to you some of the apparatus used on set, but not caught by the camera's sensitive eye in producing the motion pic- ture. Nevertheless the 1941 Capitoline is fortunate in being able to publish these exclusive photos. 1.
