Foreword. lllfl tTAl'l'l'OIilNE is the annual publication ol' thc students ot' Springfield High School and is an account of their activities during the school year which precedes its publication. Formerly The Vapitoline was devoted to the Senior Vlass, its interests and conquests. In The ttapitolines of the last few years, it is to be observed, there has been a tendency to widen the book's scope so as to include all the activities and interests of every group ol' students. We believe this book represents a marked advance in that evolution. While it. is true the personnel of the staff is composed mostly of Seniors. they were not chosen because of their length of incumbency in our venerated institution but rather because those having the aptitude and capacity for handling the work that was to be committed to them. chanced to be Seniors. We are quite sure that the entire staff was in sympathy with the general idea which we have stressed so vigorously-the only distinction between the average Freshman and the average Senior is that the former was born about an Olympiad too lateg we believe this volume will retiect that spirit. We have tried to come nearer to the hearts and souls of our tellow students, as can be done through the interpretation of the printed pageg to bring the Springfield High School, all it is and all it represents. nearer to them than have any of our illustrious predecessors in their productions. Realizing from the first the magnitude of the task. we have worked assiduously and intensively toward our goal and you now have the fruit ot our labor. VVhether we have accomplished this aim or not can be decided only by those for and about whom this volume has been compiled. We do not think ourselves competent to presage what our subscribers will finally hold as an opinion in regard to this work. 'l'wenty years hence when you are fading a bit about the temple and that adolescent dimple has lengthened into a wrinkle, drop into a retro- spective mood and dig this volume out of the garret. lf. as you tinger through it, you feel your throat tighten, see a tear drop on the page and il' you quiver as a chill runs up your spine. we shall have done our work well. -THE EDl'l'UR.
