MASSASOIT NINETEEN HUNDRED EIGHTY-TWO SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS YOU’VE GOT A FRIEND When you’re down and troubled And you need some loving care And, nothing, nothing is going right Close your eyes and think of me And soon 1 will be there To brighten up even your darkest night You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I’ll come running to see you again Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall All you have to do is call And I’ll be there You’ve got a friend If the sky above you Grows dark and full of clouds And that old north wind begins to blow Keep your head together And call my name out loud Soon you’ll hear me knocking at your door You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I’ll come running to see you Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall All you have to do is call And I’ll be there Ain’t it good to know you’ve got a friend When people can be so cold They’ll hurt you and desert you And take your soul if you let them Oh, but don’t you let them You just call out my name And you know wherever I am I’ll come running to see you again Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall All you have to do is call And I’ll be there You’ve got a friend 2 Lyric by Carole King Copyright 1971 by Colgema-KMI Music Inc. It has been a pleasure for me to watch the Class of 1982 meet these challenges and grow academically and personally. Your class will always be special to me. As you neared the completion of your freshman year, we all learned on May 10, 1979 that the Memorial Reid House had been condemned due to serious structural defi- ciences.” The student body was instrumental in our college surviving the trauma of losing the Field House. In response to this emergency, the entire college family pulled together and set about the task of building a new structure. In the fall of 1979 we broke ground for our new Physcial Education Complex. That spring, the student body rallied to save our East Campus, an effort which culminated with the construction and dedication in 1981 of the Loveland Chapel on the East Campus. Fittingly, your senior year began with the reward for our patience and hard work over the preceeding 29 months when we dedicated our striking $5.3 million Physical Educa- tion Complex on October 30. That evening, hosted by our mutual friend Art Linkletter, is among the most memorable, and proudest, in my 17 years as President of Springfield College. The Class of 1982 has proved itself to be an outstanding member of the Springfield College family, and for that I am most grateful to each of you. Your class will be special in my heart also because its membership includes a coed I love more than anyone else in the world. Thank you for your many kindnesses to her. Good luck and God bless you! We have come together in this friendship because we have our differences to bring to each other. So listen to me as I listen to you and we’ll hear ourselves grow into the realization of expanding mutual respect. Diane Westlake 289 290 291 i 292 You must be a friend every day — to someone along your way — You must become a part of their world — to build the trust it takes to have them become a part of yours — Jonivan 293 Don't Quit When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must, but don’t quit. Life is queer with its twists and turns. As everyone of us sometimes learns, And many a fellow turns about When he might have won had he stuck it out. Don’t give up though the pace seems slow — You may succeed with another blow. Often the goal is nearer than It seems to a faint and faltering man; Often the struggler has given up When he might have captured the victor's cup; And he learned too late when the night came down, How close he was to the golden crown. Success is failure turned inside out — The silver tint of the clouds of doubt, And you never can tell how close you are. It may be near when it seems far; So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit, It’s when things seem worst that you musn’t Quit. 294 Author Unknown Laurie LaLiberte CAMERA SHY SENIORS John L. Who’s staunch and true and bold; Was brand new on the day you met, Tho now you call him old. So make new friends each passing day The years quickly unfold; And new friends whom you make today ill soon be classed as old you! ’ll have a store wealth That far surpasses gold; For all the friends who now are new you’ll soon be calling old.
