The station filled many a lonely evening, or filled campus gatherings with music. 32 Psi Chi The purpose of our organization is to advance the science of Psychology; and to encourage, stimulate, and maintain scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology. As an organization, we attempt to introduce differ- ent specialties in Psychology and related areas as to allow students the opportunity to expand their knowledge in a field of their interest. Our organization sponsors panels, symposiums, films and discussions, as well as noney-raising activities to allow us the room to bring in renowned people in specific areas. H.I.R.S. The HIRS (Health Information Referral Service) staff consists of SC students who plan and implement programs designed to increase self-awareness in the areas of values, goals, personal growth, health and sexuality. Growth and change during the college years is an ongoing process. Our values and goals are constantly being chal- lenged, reinforced, or modified. Being aware of these changes can enhance per- sonal growth. HIRS would like to give you the opportunity to take the time to get to know yourself. If I never try anything, I never learn anything If I never take a risk, I stay where I am. To grow is to change and to have changed often is to have grown much. Then we went out to try and win the homecoming float contest; we lost, but had lots of fun doing it, (although our truck got stolen at the last minute). The Red Cross really appreciated it when the Bloodmobile came here to Springfield College and our class participated in the inter- class competition of who could donate the most blood. Our biggest event was planning a big concert for winter weekend. We decided to go all out and get a big name. The Outlaws. Unfortunately, after all the work that the class members put in planning and setting up. Mother Nature was against us. One of the members of the band was snowed in at Cleveland. The Class has also helped out by sponsoring the social hour and the After-dinner theater in March. Now we are planning for Bands in the pub and a big surprise at the pub for Sti- Yu-Ka. 35 Recreation Club The Recreation Club of 1977-1978 has been rejuvenated by four enthu- siastic individuals. These four new people are the officers — President Mark Margeson, Vice-President Reg- ina Park, Secretary Gina Stravic, and Treasurer Wendy Rubin. Our goal is to aid students in preparation for their professional field. To reach this goal we organize various activities that will place the student into situations that will make them realize how important planning procedures, time schedules, equipment preparations, etc., are. All of these aspects are discussed in classes and the Rec Club is a good place to practice them. We also make available information on Rec Conferences, employment magazines, and membership in professional organizations. We welcome any information a member has regarding our field, the department, agencies, or any new and crazy idea! Our newest activity this year was the October Festival held during Halloween weekend. It included a pumpkin carving contest, costume dance in Alumni Hall, and Trick or Treat for UNICEF, which netted $112.00! Other events we sponsored were New Games for the YMCA High School Conference, Christmas window painting contest, and a Las Vegas slide show and display. Our Club also participated in the Springfield Park and Recreation Department winter carnival, snow sculpture contest, European slide show by Susie Johnson, Bingo night in the Pub, Sti-Yu-Ka events, and much more. 40 Pegasus The Pegasus Horse Club was formed lor those people in the Springfield College Family who have an interest in horses. The Club provides an opportunity in which spectators, beginners through to advanced riders can gain or increase their knowledge about the care of horses, horse anatomy, training horses, selec- tion and care of equipment, show riding and judging, stable management, and horsemanship. The club encourages the development of self-confidence, responsibility and self-discipline while everyone experi- ences the enjoyment of horses. This year, the club offered a riding program, catering to all levels of English riding, plus a stable manage- ment program at Fox Run Farm in Suffield, CT. An invitation was extended to all SC students to join the Pegasus Club members in trail riding, watching the National Horse Show hold at Madison Square Garden in New York City and attending clinics, films and lectures covering all areas of horses and horsemanship. Members also rode in intercollegiate horse shows which provided them with a pleasant and memorable experience in the show ring and a chance to make friends with riders from other colleges. On November 6, the members put on an intercollegiate horse show inviting all area colleges to participate. President — Joanne Konieczny; Vice-President — Judi Blumenthal; Secretary — Sue Wetzel; Treasurer — Amy Merrill. 42 44 -T- 45 46 47 48 52 56 58 59 Mad Dog 1st Annual Golf Tournament 60 Soccer For the first time in the history of Springfield College the women of the campus pooled their talents to form the SC Women's Soccer Club. It was through the efforts of Donna Millecun that this club got its start and through coaches Steve Leger, Dave Pollack, and Mark Racine, that the club achieved its success. This soccer club started out the season with only a few sched- uled games and ended up with a total of ten going for a 6-2-2 record. Included in this sched- ule was a weekend tournament at Yale. The Springfield club had to settle for second place after losing to the Yale varsity women in a dou- ble overtime shoot-out. Other competition that the club faced included high school and college varsity teams, and other clubs in the Springfield and surrounding New England area. Plans for the Springfield Women's Soccer Club's second season are in the making with much enthusiasm from its members. The future for this club looks promising and, with some effort, maybe this club will be able to join the Springfield Col- lege's team list as the Women's Varsity Soccer Team. 63 66 “If I could save time in a bottle . . . 70 72 Poem — anonymous you would measure tint the measureless and the immeasurable, pxi would id rat gour conduct and even direct the course of yourgpdit according to hours and seasons. Ziogas and Consol were also named to the All-Tournament team in the Eastern Connecticut Tourney in March. 158 Archie Allen will be retiring from position of Head Coach for Springfield's baseball team at the end of this season. Coach Allen held the position of base ball Coach for 31 seasons. At the beginning of the season he did not interpret his players as great; I didn't think we'd have a great team, but this group has really done wonders. The team certainly aided in ending his career on a good note. Coach Allen will receive the Distinguished Service Award of the New England Collegiate Baseball Association at the annual college all-star game in Manches- ter. The award was presented for Coach Allen's achievements and hard work in New England College baseball. In his thirty-one years as Head Coach, Coach Allen compiled a record of 442-248. Other outstanding performers for the 78 baseball season were Tim Duquette who was a catcher, right fielder Kevin Costello, and Rich McKeon, an outfielder. 159 Coif Front Row: Peter Harper, Jim Mitus, John Holenko, Mike Boyages, Kyle Evans. Working as a unit, the team instilled in itself a sense of pride which seemed to overcome insurmountable odds. Play- ing an intense, but clean brand of Rugby, the club upset such college powerhouses as Williams College and Amherst Col- lege?, along with dominating the more experienced club sides such as Berkshire RFC and Berlin RFC. The Western Massachusetts RFC is made up of entirely Springfield College students, is entirely self supporting and quite proud of this fact. With the aid of Dr. Thomas Keenan as coach, the Rugby Alumni Association and the faithful Rugger Muggers. In each unselfish stride. Our sacrifice — our gift to give. For all that we could not Because the time too quickly closed On the next soul that God sought. Why did God seize a soul so young? With yet such youthful breath. Who could have had much more to give, What purpose served his death? I never even knew him. But I see the influence that he left — His purpose is partly in his life, — and partly in his death. I le's made us take a closer look At the privilege it is to live. And into your earthly hearts And find what we have left to give.
