1972 MASSASOIT Yearbook of Springfield College, Springfield, Massachusetts Bradbury, Sayles, O'Neill, Inc.: Publisher Stevens Studio: Senior Portraits Edited by Glen G. Lyons and J. Todd Miles Advisor: Hubert F. Hill 2 8 9 Day of Dedication September 18, 1971 will always be remembered as a great day in the history of the College. The unveiling of a plaque in the Babson Library, plus the official open- ing of a new Poly-Turf athletic field, highlighted the day's events. Trustee Art Linkletter was on hand for both events with his impromptu sparkling repartee, thus making the day memorable for Dr. and Mrs. Paul Babson and all who participated in the program. Dr. George Deaver '12, who played in the first game on Pratt Field in 1910, took part in the “kick-off ceremo- nies with Dr. Linkletter. 13 d HOWDY DOODY TIME d SHA-NA-NA ROW I—George Harl, George Adams, Ion Davis, Neil Boissoneau, Brian Volo, Jeff Cillis, Dave Meier, John Evangelisla, Wayne Sanborn, Bob Liljedahl. Swanbufg President Wilbert E. locklin 62 To the Class of 1972: Readers of this volume in the years ahead-and col- lege yearbooks in today's culture tend to endure as bookshelf, if not coffee table, adornments-will marvel at the antiquity of the pictures and the text. Change has been everpresent within the environs of learning, and its critics have been legion. One scholar viewed innovation with alarm by re- marking, This invention of yours will produce forget- fulness in the minds of those who learn it, causing them to neglect their memory. The speaker was Socr- ates. He was talking about writing. While the changes you have witnessed and spon- sored or resisted in four years here seem less dramatic than the implementation of writing, some will have enduring impact in the decades that lie ahead. Defi- nitively, I would classify your greatest contribution as an immensely heightened sense of concern-concern for your fellow man, concern for your world, concern for your future. You've exhibited this by stressing the pointlessness of war, the repugnance of racial in- justice, the hazards of ecological suicide, the need for restraint in population growth, the value of love. You've been criticized by notables en route to these goals, as the inventor of penmanship was criticized by Socrates. But writing survived, and so, I believe, will your worthiest aspirations. Even people over thirty have begun to listen. For that you can be proud. Thank you. Class of '72, for what you've done for me. I only hope our combined efforts over these brief years together, will prove to have accomplished something of worth for each of you. Wilbert E. Locklin, President Dr. Lawrence O. Lobdell Dr. Wayne E. Sinning 64 Vidor H. Mancini 65 66 Hubert F. Hill 67 Robert |. Bergquist During my seven years at Springfield College, I learned a great deal about the college while away from campus. All too often I find a deeper respect for the institution's uniqueness and a greater appreciation of its goals off campus than on campus. Representing the college at presidential in- augurations, reading papers at English teachers' con- ferences, recruiting faculty, and doing sponsored re- search, I clocked about 23,000 miles in Springfield's name. The trips took me from Boston to Juneau and from Minneapolis to Atlanta. I learned that people as far away as Sitka, Alaska, know about Springfield College and know there is something which keeps our college from being a car- bon copy of other educational institutions. Not surpri- singly, however, they are unable to define the difference. We cannot define the difference either. It is an emotional expression of a beautiful ideal thoroughly discussed in our Humanics philosophy, but never suc- cinctly stated nor clearly worked out in deed. It is un- definable, but it is felt. For example, at the turn of the century we thought it could be defined as clean-cut and Christian; we thought it was somehow related to physical activity; we thought it was surely part of social service; we thought it was in the becoming a whole man. But cul- tural changes occured. There was a time when a thor- ough grounding in the classics was considered the only proper education, but women didn't smoke in public then. There was a time when alchemy was thought of as a legitimate science, but words such as aerial interdiction were unknown then. There was a time when only the rich and only the white went to school, but the pill wasn't even a dream then. Springfield reflected these cultural changes and changed too. But because things once done are nearly impossible to undo, Springfield, like other institutions, is cautious and slow to take on new ideas. Although it seems to us to be an unwarranted carefulness, the changes in philosophy, in direction, in curricula have been madc-and the struggle continues. Although the notion is confusing, most of us know that Springfield, like all other colleges, is a legal entity, not human. A college can have a personality and a character, and most colleges are nothing if not the sum of their human elements. Because a college is, in that sense, human, it often is baffling and con- tradictory and stupid and once in a while wonderful. When a student enters college, he often thinks The College should be smarter than anyone. He thinks the Table of Organization is really the way it is. He looks for firm policies, procedures, and clearly defined goals. When he discovers that people of the college ususally are no less fallible, gullible, creative, chari- table, or foolish than those in the last institution he at- tended, he slides into shock. For some, disillusionment begins here; for others, opportunity; for most, compromise. For all the criticism directed at education, it is worth considering that school excellence has given us many of the problems which divide our nation today. It was not illiterate, backward men who spiked our residential skylines with forests of television antennas, spoiled our rivers with the wastes of a hundred growth industries, fouled our air with the contrails of a thou- sand jet planes taking off daily, or choked our cities with automobiles that cost as much to park as to buy. That work was done by men whose schooling enabled them to develop transistors, no-deposit-no-return bottles, pressurized cabins, and a 36-months-to-pay economy. It was not ignorant men who designed a rifle bullet that can spin end over end to increase its flesh-tearing capacity, fashioned temperature-controlled labora- tories where plague can be safely cultivated in test tubes, or coined the term “aerial interdiction to re- place old-fashioned bombing , shielding themselves and their fellow citizens from the ugly truth that na- palm works by setting people on fire. That work was done by men whose schooling in the sciences enabled them to develop a military technology and in its se- mantics, a war ethic whose grasp far exceeds the reach of our political morality. And so too it is worth remembering that Springfield's excellence has brought the problems we face today. When the college places authority in the hands of administrators who understand that educa- tion is exposure to all sides of all questions, they inevi- tably attempt to cultivate a balanced faculty which represents the Left as well as the Right. And that cul- turally and academically sound gesture often causes 68 administration much suffering, for the natural play of those opposite forces pressures the Center into the question of tolerence of how far Left or Right a por- tion of the faculty should be allowed to move. When faculty discharges its moral charge and leads the student to think instead of to accept, to balance his emotional passion with his passion for logic, to voice rather than to hide, and to do something posi- tive with the uniqueness of his personality and bent, a whole Pandora's box is opened. The question is what to do with Hope. We must encourage Springfield to cultivate a catho- lic faculty and student population. We must stimulate students to generate ideas. We must, no matter the private direction or our thoughts, work out the hope of open commitment to one another's growth. In these ways Springfield will continue serving an impor- tant role in education while maintaining that real, yet undefinable, difference. Dr. Hesselbarth Dr. Robert Hesselbarth 70 Edward T. Formed only a few years ago, the club has grown to a present membership of 50. Although the name of the club might imply that only those who actually ride horseback belong, the purposes and activities of the club are not limited to riding only. A member does not have to have had any previous riding skill, nor is she he required to ride once in the club. For those interested in learning the skill, riding lessons at all levels are available by ar- rangement through local stables. Activities held by the club this year included trail riding. Am. Horse Show Assoc, films, attendente to clinics, and meeting with Mr. Harris, president of the Combined Training Program, and Mr. Wesson, presi- dent of the U.S. Pony Clubs. Two new activities this year were the forming of a gymkhana and intercollegiate equestrian team. Joining the Intercollegiate Horse Show' Assoc, gave many an opportunity to show. Teams were drawn from the club according to interest and availability. Both Sally Kaul and Diane Woodard won enough points to make their division's championship class. Other blue ribbon winners during the season were Gail Hanley and Paul- ine Kazanowski. The rest of the team were: Jill Giaco- muzzi, Molly Gibson, Evelyn Estvanik, Mary Mleczko, Cathy Stirling, Connie Ward, Mindy Bishop, and Jan Mildram. Overall, our team ended their first season ranking 12th out of 30 to 35 colleges. The gymkhana teams, also chosen by interest, have been successful. 109 no Ill 112 MARLIN CLUB 113 114 117 t 121 122 123 125 126 127 128 129 Bottom: Todd Stitzer, Bill Melanson, Doug Brimblecom. This year the group, under the direction of Gilbert T. Vickers, performed the Schubert Mass in G and a selection of traditional Christmas Ca- rols at their annual Christmas Concert. The concert was performed at Hope Congregational Church in Springfield before an enthusiastic and appreciative audience. In previous years the Singers have toured the east- ern U.S. and Canada during their annual Spring Tour. However, this year their director, Mr. Vickers, has planned a sabbatical for the remainder of the school year. The Heathortones and Scotchmen, two select ensembles chosen from the Singers, will continue to perform throughout the year, however. Next year the Singers will once again plan a full year of activity. You call me the lady that comes to help you on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, (and suddenly I feel so old) presenting me with sweaty, rolled up pieces ol Wrigley’s Spearmint, shuflling your fool with embarrassment. Highly literate though she is - even addicted to books - she is no mere curator of the works of others. She also writes, paints, gardens, and maintains an attractive home for an appreciative husband. She is a frequenter of theaters and art galleries, and a devotee of the New Yorker magazine, whose poetry editor was her college roommate. But most of all, she sees life through the eyes of an artist. Doris enjoys people, and good conversation by the fireside. She has been the instigator of faculty teas and neighborhood picnics. She is also a lover of solitude, good at loafing in a hammock at her summer home on the Cape, watching the birds fly and the grass grow. She meets the vicissitudes of life with philosophical calm.
