MAGSASOIT NINETEEN HUNDRED SIXTY-FIVE SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE Springfield, Massachusetts EDITOR - JUANITA PARRY BUSINESS MANAGER - CONNEE WEINTRAUB The essence of Springfield •I is not confined to the dimensions of a triangle . . . Yet, there are oh so many fragments of dreams I cannot remember and scenes I have passed without recollections . . . 7 8 Walls in blue quite new icehouse view. Quicksand, quicksand, all fall down. But I can watch from behind a far-off tree Security is often obscured when the crowd dissipates, or time makes love pass, or three numbers don’t provide an answer. The familiar can be such a parody in my little world. It’s difficult not to smash the glass to stop the sand from piling up more grains against me, and I can’t always watch the drama of two hands in the round . . . I can’t always wait. 12 Linking together the parts that are a whole can be amusing, or nostalgic, or absurd, 14 15 16 Our ideas are seldom profound; but so many minutes are devoted to fleeting meditations. 17 18 Springfield saves so many faces from social obscurity and the stigmas of numerical significance — but they congregate, and clinging to the whims and anticipations of the masses, they become mere faces in the crowd. 19 but one face realizes another, and sometimes I cannot escape alone. 22 TWO can have one hell of a time. TRADITIONS have a way of 24 being watered-down to preserve idealism. 25 26 Wearing a beanie or a conspicuous nametag is something to be fought against, yet I can’t help but wish them upon my successors. 28 Homecoming brought us back to the rain and a myriad of color. Shouts and sounds were pleasantly muffled under the circular tents. 30 Mud and dampness, Northeastern and Wesleyan were the aggressors. 31 After it was over, there were those who felt especially good inside — mud-covered pigskinners, Sally, the class of ’65. 34 A folk atmosphere ATTRACTS AND SATISFIES MANY and provides an outlet for an outcry against the injustices of a twisted time; a release for a suppressed rhythm. Artistic expressions formed thoughtful impressions of Pete Seeger and The Appalachian Folk Society. SOUND SLIPPED INTO A DARKENED SILENCE and I was stranded halfway between an involved reality and an aloof detachment. Let us savor the waning warmth of a near-forgotten summer. 38 Naked branches sprawled against each other forming a meshed backdrop for a microcosm of movement . . . And the boys were stirred to perpetuate Halloween. 39 SENATOR SALTONSTALL brought to the campus new perspectives in relevant human affairs and events. KATHY CORRIGAN . . . exemplifying the Olympic image. Grace, perfection of movement, dedication and humility, are but ineffective verbal translations of the qualities of a champion. 41 42 JOHNSON SWEEPS 64% OF SC VOTE Active campaigning by the Young Democrats, Young Republicans, and the Triangle Club of Republicans and Independents for Johnson, bombarded the college with political flavor and fervor over the National elections. 44 Brought acclamation to the Attic Players, a dramatic production involving new talents, and a memorable Parent's Weekend event to the stage under the rafters of Room 400. 45 46 Underground, behind ivy-draped walls . . . I still wonder over the ecology of institutional living, and the effects of over-grouping, 48 togetherness, and compromise. 49 too often a world is composed of only so many hockeysticks. 50 Value is a difficult phenomenon to discern, but when does the minutia become realized and separated from relevant substance? 52 54 Escape may wear any number of disguises, and Christmas Balls are unassuming means of breaking the pressure of ap- proaching finals . . . but long winter nights and early closing hours leave much room for mental fantasy. 55 yet, Harvard beat us at our own game. Holes of fame and peach baskets of long ago create new meanings for Springfield’s glory, obscure uprisings, and new dilemmas for old crusaders . . . 57 COMMUNICATION through various forms of expression re-lates the campus to the outer community, 59 I become engulfed in the obscurity of vague shadows and the darkness of remote tomorrows. Many moods mock me, mold me. 63 y the manifestation of living. Remote vantage points permit uninvolvement and non-commital feelings, while reciprocal correlations are nullified by insensitivity. 64 Our words are often lacking significance, still, the tirades persist, 66 reaching out for so many intangible ends. 67 We are at times, absorbed into the depths of our own individualism — estranged from the existence of surrounding substance. 68 69 The outreach of another entity is an involving phenomenon that penetrates distant, solitary moments, and brings us back. 71 Frequent pauses in the total scheme shut out the unwanted world, yet hardly resolving the enigma. 73 Still, the familiar segments are patterns that confront me at every turn, padding the corridors of my wanderings. 74 76 They are as silent memorials to my enclosed existence. The cold, white invader was a causal factor supplementing innovative potential. 78 79 I retreat to be pensive, an explorer of distant thoughts then explosive, an intruder in quiet realms. 81 Sportsmanship is a noble ambition winning is a sought after truth. 83 The ocean of eyes is upon me, a rhythmic actor, a creator of moods, a seeker of movement . . . 84 and who is to judge me? 86 I can only react to my momentary whims — my uninhibited displays. Kovines' thKomjL I am known by my graphic creativity. 91 Off-campus apartments are becoming a forgotten phenomenon. 92 We are the fortunate who are grouped in the stretching structures. 93 I have found someone to listen . . . 95 96 98 those who have the voices for my thoughts, and those who would record and synthesize — that I might reflect. 101 I am perplexed by concepts that seem too distant to be involved with surrounding reality. but where is the whole man? 104 DR.
