DR. GLENN A. OLDS President Dear Senior: Four years slip by so swiftly. It seems only a moment ago we were welcoming you. Yet, much has happened in the world, and in you, to remind us these have been time-filled, momentous days. Men orbiting the earth in outer space remind us how small our world has be- come, yet how great the mind and power of man to understand and transcend it. Sit-ins in Mississippi re- mind us how students silently run, while sitting, to help the dispossessed of the earth catch up to their rightful human opportunity. Test-ban treaties conclude to con- firm the possibility of peace in our time; and the tragic assassination of our president reminds us of the coun- terpart of peace, the sad scramble of hate in the heart of a man, that war in “inner” space, we must win or all is lost. In less dramatic ways, perhaps, our campus, too, and you, have changed, not merely in appearance, but in spirit and maturity. There is a livelier internationalism, a keener sense of participation in the “running sound of history.” Personal responsibility runs deep in your class, and the first steps of our long awaited judiciary system and honor code you have taken. It is with confidence we see you stride to meet your future, made for running. May our confidence in you be matched by your own commitment. May our motto for our 75th Anniversary coined the year you came go before you as you leave—“whole persons in a divided world —healing and helping youth everywhere. Glenn A. Olds President 14
