Text from Pages 1 - 224 of the 1964 volume:

Springfield College Springfield Massachusetts A college can be more than an institution of higher learning. The knowledge we seek at Springfield is the means for achieving our ulti- mate goal—concern for man and service to mankind. With a genuine belief in this ideal the college was founded and . . . 4 5 With strength of mind the body is built. The score might only be second but if the individual has gained a deeper insight into life from the competition, the game is not lost. 6 And a tradition took shape and began to develop. 7 Spirit is the link of the strong mind and powerful body. It is the tran- quility of the chapel, the enthusiasm of a happy crowd, the eagerness of a young man rising to meet a challenge. The integration of the mind, body and spirit is dynamic and a tradition became a legend. 8 To you the friend of Springfield College, we hope you'll he able to capture part of the Spirit of the Springfield Tradition. And to you the graduate, may this book serve in some small way as a tangible reminder of the myriad intangibles we together found at Springfield. 9 dedica tion It is not often that a man can arrive on a college campus and have the power of his personality and intelligence felt so quickly and ef- fectively. We can not thank this man for decades of devoted service for he has been at Springfield for only two years. But if an hour were a day and a month a year, his infamous wit, the mutual respect shared by students and a faculty member and his many hours devoted to the development of the student as a dynamic and rational social being, would have long been established as a legend. For the spirit of the Springfield Tradition which he so completely exemplifies, the 1964 Massasoit is dedicated to Mr. Howard Bavcnder. 10 . . . the power of his intelligence . . . . . . mutual respect shared by students and a faculty member . . . 11 ... And he would gladly learn and gladly teach .. . Chaucer faculty and administration -I' — ... .__________ m DR. GLENN A. OLDS President Dear Senior: Four years slip by so swiftly. It seems only a moment ago we were welcoming you. Yet, much has happened in the world, and in you, to remind us these have been time-filled, momentous days. Men orbiting the earth in outer space remind us how small our world has be- come, yet how great the mind and power of man to understand and transcend it. Sit-ins in Mississippi re- mind us how students silently run, while sitting, to help the dispossessed of the earth catch up to their rightful human opportunity. Test-ban treaties conclude to con- firm the possibility of peace in our time; and the tragic assassination of our president reminds us of the coun- terpart of peace, the sad scramble of hate in the heart of a man, that war in “inner” space, we must win or all is lost. In less dramatic ways, perhaps, our campus, too, and you, have changed, not merely in appearance, but in spirit and maturity. There is a livelier internationalism, a keener sense of participation in the “running sound of history.” Personal responsibility runs deep in your class, and the first steps of our long awaited judiciary system and honor code you have taken. It is with confidence we see you stride to meet your future, made for running. May our confidence in you be matched by your own commitment. May our motto for our 75th Anniversary coined the year you came go before you as you leave—“whole persons in a divided world —healing and helping youth everywhere. Glenn A. However, the loss of last year’s standouts proved not to be as catastrophic as was originally thought. The “Nai- smith boys ignored the predictions and went out and chalked up a truly admirable record. Their two four-point losses in the District 1 playoffs were truly heartbreak- ing. However, we lost only in that we did not score as many points as our opponents. The Maroons certainly played as well, if not better, than both Adelphi and Assumption. 127 The play sparking aggressiveness of Captains Ken Sa- rubbi and Fred Bredice (which gave him a career total of well over 1000 points) were definitely significant factors which influenced the team's success. 128 FROSH RESULTS Won 9, Lost 6 SC OPP 74 Yale 84 63 Brandeis 47 87 Leicester JC 72 78 Tufts 91 87 Williams 79 104 Worcester Aca 107 92 Hartford 59 76 Amherst 79 80 Holy Cross 83 81 Northeastern 95 100 WP1 70 88 AIC 34 85 Clark 79 111 AIC 51 88 Hartford 75 freshman basketball team First Row: Asst. WALTER ZIMMERMANN Major—American Studies 44 Gales Drive, New Providence, N. J. The spirit of any tradition rests with the people. However, as the spirit of the Springfield Tradition evolved, the Springfield campus did not remain static. From a three story building at Armory Hill in 1885 to its present location on Lake Massasoit the campus has spread out and built up. 198 With the construction of a five storied dorm and Judd Gym- nasium the campus began to take its present form. When the dorm was converted to a two storied administration building, Alumni Hall was erected. 199 From the site of the first basketball scrimmage in 1891 to the site of the Basketball Hall of Fame, Springfield has shown its perpetual concern for the development of the human body. RASKETBALL HALL or rrtML SSS:. sS'S' SSW 200 With the end of World War II and the commencement of the building campaign, the belief that a strong body is essential in today’s life was re-enforced by the construction of the Field House. 201 The graduate of the Class of '64 was one of the first to use The Bever- idge Center, the nucleus of campus life. Also he witnessed the comple- tion of two men's dorms, one girl’s dorm, the science building and Woods Hall. 202 As the campus continues to develop the grad- uate continues to mature. As both pass through the portals of time, they are nurtured by an un- veering spirit. This is THE SPIRIT OF THE SPRINGFIELD TRADITION and it stands as A LIVING LEGEND. !! a b - :.«-h i iLIhs::!.;, 8!! !!!!! This is especially true of year- book publishing, in which mass production methods have the tendency to force one to buy just what the other fellow buys. Making of soap or soup or salad dress- ing by mass methods is one thing. But it is quite another to attempt to produce a creative yearbook by trying to squeeze it into some pre conceived mold. It just can't be done that way. The Wm. J. Keller firm brings together highly trained craftsmen, the very finest papers and ink of superlative quality. Add to these a unique service plan built around the individual school, and, finally, produc- tion by the Velvatone process, which Keller perfected especially for the printing of yearbooks, and you have a truly distin- guished performance. And a yearbook with singular character and individuality . . . we call it THE LOOK OF THE BOOK. The yearbook you are presently leafing through is the product of the Keller custom program. If you would care to see other examples of THE LOOK OF THE BOOK” as produced by Wm. J. Keller, get in touch with us now. WM. J. KELLER INC. Publishers of Finer Yearbooks Buffalo 15. N. Y. J.
