The Mass 1963 SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE Springfield, Massachusetts Dedication The staff of the 1963 MASSASOIT is proud to be able to dedicate this yearbook to an individual who has been a fine teacher and true friend to every Springfield student, Mr. Holmes Newton Vanderbeck. During his seventeen years of service to the school he has become one of the most beloved members of the Springfield family. His work with the students and faculty only reflect a small measure of his devotion to Springfield. To one who has dedicated so much of himself in aiding us we give this small token of appreciation: THE 1963 MASSASOIT. 2 Mr. Vanderbcck — candidly 3 CoO«',r' “ C A tr -jjo ° ,.u seef W v ,a k.N •• o ° e9e c- V r. • • ? «,,, K °ncerj. They are heavy with remembering and hope. They carry so much that can never reach the freedom of speech, seen only by the eyes of the heart. Still, like the ancient god Janus, farewells look in both directions at once — past and future — and gather up both moods of gratitude and expectation. To you seniors, then, our farewell is in the order of a fanfare, celebrating all that you have done and leave of yourself while here; and heralding your future in service to others and that of the College which goes with you. There will be much that we both forget. This is part of life's economy, lightening our load for swifter running. But there will be much never forgotten, snapshots of yourself in action such as are recorded- here. Like icebergs, they will merely punctuate the surface with the deeper prophecy of all that lies beneath and around these moments of learning. And, like Liza, may you leap from them into the future, not to escape from here, but to land running on the shores of all your tomorrows. May all that was best in your years here go with you. 10 Glenn A. Olds President DR. ATTA UAH A. KIDESS Administrative Vice President; Foreign Student Advisor: Professor of Physical Education MR. Dick Hcssion Terry Merritt Kirk Randall Desire, good leadership, and more miles, this was the story, as fame con- tinued to pile up for Coach Vern Cox’s forces. Led by Co-Captains Terry Mir- ritt, and Kirk Randall, they breezed through their season’s nine dual meets, captured third place in the New Englands, and wrapped up the season with a 4th place in the N.C.A.A. College Championships in Wheaton, Illinois. Overall team strength was the biggest factor in the success of this team. As the season progressed each man improved markedly, and opponents had difficulty in spreading out this squad. The leader throughout the campaign for these thin- clads was Terry Pop” Merritt, who continually led the Maroons to victory and highlighted his career with a record smashing course record over his home course against the University of Connecticut. Coach Dunn and Captain John Chester 52 Coach Ted Dunn’s 1962-63 edition of the Spring- field College football team, although experiencing a dismal season, could very well have closed the cam- paign with a winning record. The Maroons lost four games by one touchdown or less, and with the big play, the final results could have been entirely differ- ent. The team lost two 3-point decisions to Williams and Hofstra, two powerful elevens, and only the score of 7-0 marked the difference between Yankee Confer- ence Champion New Hampshire and our “never-say- die” gridmen. ah' sweet taste of victory 6 points for Dave It is hard, sometimes, to lose ballgames and still fight with all the heart of champions, but these men never gave up. Although being considerably outweighed in the line and playing a schedule dominated by schools who offer a great many athletic scholarships, our team fought in such a way as to earn the respect and admira- tion of all their opponents and the student body of Springfield College. There will be fourteen lettermen returning next fall. This, coupled with the fact that this year’s fresh- man team had the best record in the history of the school, should insure the success of next year’s team. Our opponents best beware of the Maroon’s next sea- son, as the outlook is excellent. 53 that's just about far enough Dan Di Lena Lou Dcllasanta John Chester Jim Bootluoyd Dave Frcdcrickson Dave Leetc George Mangels let's talk this over fellas Wayne Sicnkicwicz Bill Payne Neil Odams it has to be here somewhere Freshman Football FRESHMAN RESULTS S.C. Varsity Soccer This was to be the year for Coach Schmid’s hooters, and when the nets were finally taken down for the last time and the shoes were stored away for another year, it had turned out that this prophecy had come true. The hustling, battling Maroons swept through the New England League, and advanced all the way to the semi-final round of the N.C.A.A. Soccer Tournament in St. Louis, Missouri. Despite fine play and leadership from such seniors as Dan McMahon, Ken Peterson, Tuffy Phelps, and Skip Sharper the Maroons could do no better than split their next five games. They bowed to Wesleyan and their old nemesis Williams, defeated Brown and Connecticut, and tied M.I.T. The final game of the regular season was to be a showdown with unde- feated, highly touted Bridgeport. The Maroons getting a fine performance from Bob Hamill, Bill Burke, Neil Stam and Bob Hess, and showing lots of spirit, determination, and hustle, came through with a thrilling 3-1 victory to earn the coveted invitation to play in the N.C.A.A. Soccer Championships, the finals of which were to be held in St. Louis, Missouri. George Anderson Pete Apostol Jake Armstrong Dave Burt 57 The quarter-finals of the N.C.A.A. Soccer Tourney were to be held here on our own Springfield campus and our hooters were scheduled to meet highly touted Hartwick, the New York State Champions. They responded by playing their best ball of the season and defeated their foes in a thrilling, hard fought match, 2-1, presenting Coach Schmid the ball after the game for his 100th win. Then came the dream trip” to Sr. Louis where the Maroons met the University of Maryland in the semi-final round and receiving more than their share of bad breaks, were defeated. Thus our hooters ended their highly successful season, ranked third in the nation. Ac the time of this write-up, the team boasts a record of 17 wins against just 5 defeats. Regardless of the outcome of the final two encounters, the team will have had its best record in over twenty years. Although Coach Steicz did not use the 2-platoon system he employed last year, depth was the key to the team’s success. The starting line-up was juggled constantly and substitution was fre- quent. If Bredice or Sarubbi weren’t hot,” Argir or Marinko were, and it was just a matter of finding out who was on, and substituting accordingly. The highlight of the season was a 74 to 72 win over perennial powerhouse Holy Cross. It was a stunning team victory for the Maroons, and was a big factor in the selection of Springfield as a participant in the NCAA Tournament. Although the loss of Captain Ray Marinko, Tom Zeranski, Brad Ek, and Ray Gilbert cannot be taken lightly, the outlook for next season would seem to be excellent. The return of six letter- men, together with the acquisition of good height and good shoot- ers from a good Freshman team, should make the Maroons a team to beat again next year. 86 JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM, Row 1: C. Gymnastic Team As usual, this year’s gymnastic team ran up against the finest teams in the East. Led by Captain Bob Haldeman and high scorer Bruce Wright, with outstanding performances from Bill Scherer, Steve Ross, Jeff Zimmerman, and Rick and Ken Black, the Maroons were in contention in all but the West Point meet. The fact that this year’s team was comprised mostly of outstanding sophomores, coupled with the fact that the freshman team enjoyed an un- defeated season, the 1963-64 edition of the gymnastic team should be out- standing. The exhibition team, Springfield College’s ambassadors of good will, con- tinued to amaze people with their spectacular display of talent. The addition of women to the team for the first time (led by senior Katie Wallace, sopho- more Carol Nissly, and freshman Kathy Corrigan) proved very successful, and instead of meeting with capacity crowds at their performance they en- countered turn-away crowds. All-in-all this year’s gymnastics season proved to be very successful and promising. No wonder we are know to many as the gymnasts ! Ac the time of this write-up, they are boasting a record of 10 wins and 1 tie, and it looks as if they are a cinch to capture the New England Wrestling Tournament for the 13th consecutive time. 99 Please Paul, my girl's in the stands. Gcc, I'm awful sorry, but... So far this season, the Maroons have beaten such Eastern powers as F M, Cornell, and Hofstra, as well as the majority of the New England teams. The tie came at the hands of West Point, a perennial Eastern powerhouse, and it is the opinion of those who viewed the meet, that Springfield could have won the contest with a few breaks. The only obstacle standing between the Maroons and an undefeated season is the final meet of the sea- son against Lehigh. Lehigh won the Easterns last year, and are strong contenders again this year. If the Ma- roons can win this, they will not only have achieved an undefeated season, but they will become a recog- nized Eastern power. Under the leadership of Coach Parker and senior Co- Captains Matt Sanzone and Dick Joyce, the Maroons, regardless of the results of the final two meets, will have achieved another enviable record. Aldous Leonard Huxley Jim Lorcnzen and Gail Wohlers Bill White, Carol Smith and Sandy Levine Varsity Track Team Coach Cox’s tracksters picked up momentum after their opening day loss to Wesleyan and went on to overpower such perennial powers as the University of Massachusetts, University of Connecticut, and Williams, on their way to a fine 7-1 season. Competing against the toughest schedule in Springfield’s track history, the Maroons led by Senior Co-Captains Ted Duckiewicz and Paul McDonald, showed good team balance and several outstanding performers. In the sprints Bob Auwood and Ed Riley led the way, while the 440 was loaded with Ron Boguc and George McCombc continually smashing records. The 880 was headed by McCombe, Jay Flanagan, and Herb Jervis. Terry Merritt re-estab- lished several records as he and Kirk Randall and Paul McDonald paced the distance men. Matt Sanzonc, Frank Loiacono, Ev Walcns and Ken Peterson were the top weight men. Ken Black, Arza Bennet, and Bob Emrich, did a fine job in the jumping events. Despite an outstanding season by All-American centerfielder Archie Moore, and fine performances from Ken MacFadyen and Ev Vencurini, the hustling, daring Maroons found themselves with a porous defense and slipped to an 8-12 season. 131 i Hurley Silbor Ev Venturini Bob Willis This year's team, with its usual emphasis on speed and unpredictable strategy will be hoping to better last season’s record. The prospects look mighty good, as Coach Allen will have his entire 1962 starting line-up returning with Bob Willis and Archie Moore as the nucleus. With these experienced hands, besides several promisng Sophomores, the outlook for the season ahead ap- pears bright for the diamond men. However, although on paper this team appears to have many question marks, the capable leadership of Coach Allen should again make the Maroons a powerful New England contender. 132 FRESHMAN TEAM, Row 1: Coach Matcsa, R.
