After Miss Sober had graduated from Leechburg High School, she attended Indiana State Teachers College and later the Uni- versity of Pittsburgh. The degrees that she has attained are the Bachelor of Science and Master of Education. In connection with her own education, she made a trip to Europe in 1954. This was made possible for her through the Frick Education Commission for which she wrote an account of her journey. Miss Sober's unusual knowledge of history has often helped her Junior English students associate literary and historical periods. A particular favorite of hers is the history of her hometown and neighboring areas. As a member of the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, she has not only gained inter- esting information but has contributed histor- ical facts as well. For example she helped the society's map makers sketch Pennsylvanian Indian Trails by her possession of a map of her farm with the Indian Trails on it. She is also regent Qpresidentj and geneology chairman of the Fort Hand Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution. In addition to history, she likes to collect books and old china and furniture. She lives with her charming mother in a lovely white house set back in the trees on Marion Avenue just a block from the high school. To Miss Sober school work comes first, whether it be curricular or extra curricular. Often she was seen to remain late after school helping students catch up. She displayed remarkable casting ability and directing as sponsor of the junior Class Plays and led the girls of the Junior Tri-Hi-Y through busy successful years. Miss Sober has seen and aided the educa- tional development of Springdale to a great extent. At one time she was sponsor of this self-same book. So from now on this ELEC- TRA of 1956 shall bear to this true teacher a token of the memory of her successful years. PLEASE REMEMBER F-'HJ FIJJQ, Jibril ,FJ iv? ALMA MATER Where the vale of old Mount Colfax Meets the Western sky, Proudly stands our Alma Mater On her hilltop high. CHORUS Flag we love, orange and black, Float for ayeg Old Springdale, o'er theeg May thy sons be leal and loyal to When the evening twilight deepens, And the shadows fall, Lingers long the golden sunbeam On the western wall. 6 thy memory SCHOOL HISTORY Noting Allegheny Valley's fine high school, Reddy naturally became inter- ested in its history. He searched through old files and references and finally found a worn history book relating the colorful past of Springdale's school system. Turning to the first chapter Reddy struck upon the date 1838. As he looked closer, he found in that year Springdale's first school was established. As time went on two other schools were constructed, eventually being replaced by one building located on Pittsburgh Street and the main building of the present School Street school. After three additions to the latter in 1903, 1915 and 1927 and erection of the Colfax Grade School, it became apparent that a permanent high school was a necessity to the progressive community. Skimming through the yellowed pages, Reddy finally came to the all important chapter The New High School. H I Atop Mount Colfax, peering down over the prosperous borough, Spring- dale High School stands as a symbol of learning to all residents. The high school originally contained nine standard classrooms, a cafeteria, study hall, chemistry and biology laboratories, a gymnasium and a well-equipped library with conference and work room adjoining. Through the years additions and changes were made until the school grew into the present form. Under the able direction of Mr. Lee Aber, first principal and his successors, Mr. Herbert Ripper, Mr. Alfred Jacques and the present principal, Mr. John McCloskey, Springdale High School, with the jointure of three other school districts, Harmar Township, Cheswick and Springdale Township, has continued its fine tradition of offering to the young men and women of Springdale an education to be proud of! 6? llscilootl f g Q HRECORDS he-j K f -f V 1:11 r 1l-Tl 7 ELECTRA STAFF Editors .,.A.... .......... junior Editors .....,.. The Allegheny Valley Joint Schools board of education consists of four separate boards of education, one from each of the four merged school districts-Harmar Township, Cheswick, Springdale and Springdale Town- ship. The boards meet monthly both jointly and separately during the school term. They handle diverse situations such as: finance of the schools, maintenance of the school build- ings, retarded children, transportation for the students, sports schedules, purchasing of sup- plies which run from tablets to automobiles and the teaching staff frecommendations and resignationsj. To sum it up, they are a group of con- scientious citizens who get pleasure and civic pride from their non-profit membership in handling a job of real responsibility and de- serve applause and recognition. ADMINISTRATION P X V' i D REDDY SUBSTITUTES FOR A DAY Pinch-hitting for a regular teacher at Springdale High, Reddy was put in an excellent position to observe the accomplishments of the faculty. He was really pleased and throughout his visit noticed the tactful, thorough teaching methods in use. ll MR. LoYAL S. MARSHALL Supervising Principal Bachelor of Arts MR. JOHN E. MCCLOSKEY Principal of the High School Bachelor of Science Master of Education MR. JOHN J. ROBAK Principal oi the junior High School Bachelor of Science Master of Education To the Seniors: The long awaited hour in your life has arrived. High school days are over. Somehow, now, the joy of termination is tinged with a little regret and sadness. You are not sure you want this day. Is it because you would like to relive those days-to make things differentv? For- get it! Theylre gone and not to be al- tered. But you can do something with yourself today and tomorrow. Make each day count, and you diminish the regrets and sadness at future long awaited hours. Yesterday is finished, but tomorrow is just ahead. This is your challenge. Meet it! Best wishes to you all as you step into your new walks of life. JOHN E. MCCLOSKEY FACULTY The students appreciated the faculty, a highly educated group whose objective is to offer to the student body a well- rounded education in the various fields of the secondary school of learning. Each is a scintillating personality- really tops in his field. Sacrificing their own free time they've often stayed late after school and sponsored extra curri- cular activities in the evening. Through a fine sense of humor and well-devel- oped teaching ability they have indeed deserved the high degrees of respect and liking which are theirs. BARBARA MUSCO SENIOR CLASS Three fund-raising projects brought in the quota necessary to support a senior class banquet and publish a yearbook. Each senior was responsible for selling either Christmas cards or magazine subscriptions to accom- plish his part. Completion of this task was rewarded by a free ELECTRA and admission to the late spring banquet which was spons- ored by Miss Gerino. Every member of the class also contributed effort in the production of the class play which was highly successful. Beauty and the Beef was held at the Ches- wick Theater in April, patiently sponsored by Mrs. Hendrickson and Mr. Zott. Figuring significantly among the end-of- the-year events were the Junior-Senior Prom, and the senior class party which added to the finishing touches of a bright, happy and final year in Springdale High School. Naturally, the climax of the senior year was graduation. Walking down the aisle to receive our diplomas was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for each senior. The goal of twelve years of hard study was at last in view. Pre- ceded by the Baccalaureate service the day before, this beautiful ceremony ended each senior's years in high school. Finding every- thing pleasantly convenient and a cheery atmosphere, they soon became typical SHS students. Wholesome work and industrious study constituted the sophomore year, of course reserving time for a most successful party and dance. He discovered clubs to fit every student whether he be musi ' civic-minded, sport-supporting or journalistic. cally inclined, 47 1 1 W ELELTRA Check and double check! Wait, don't cut that yet! Such were the exclamations of the co-editors. At meetings held twice and three times a week, they planned dummies, cropped and figured picture reduc- tions, pored over yearbooks and critic books and spent hours editing literary material. Throughout the term they were aided by the competent com- mittees. Besides showing good imagination and cooperation each committee member has produced work that only he, with the necessary abilities and knowledge, could do. Under experienced management the business members planned early in summer advertising campaigns which came to life under the pen of their own artist. By introducing unique incentives to buy they suc- ceeded in obtaining an all-time high subscription rate from underclassmen and kept accurate records of the proceeds. BUSINESS COMMITTEE Sitting-R. Thorough knowledge of the press camera was necessary for the photo- graphy editor. The purpose of the Tri-Hi-Y is to create, maintain and extend throughout home, school and community high standards of Christian character. Its slogan is pure thoughts, pure words, pure actions. The colors are red for sacrifice, white for purity, and blue for loyalty. The main project of the Senior Tri-Hi-Y was, according to tradition, the Harvest Moon, a Thanksgiving semi-formal which was the highlight of the fall season. This year the theme was Silver Fountains against a back- ground of Pink Moonlight. Dancing was to the Glenn Norris Dance Band, featuring a former Tri-Hi-Y member, Eileen Garner, as vocalist. Led by Mrs. Bukovac, the club was a tremendous success. The Junior Tri-Hi-Y, sponsored by Miss Sober, helped its members live up to the high standards of living set by the club. Its main project was the reversed dance, the Cupid's Caper. Valentine Day set a romantic theme and with the elimination dance, cake drawing and the unusual requests, it was a grand night for everyone. All in all, the Tri-Hi-Y was a source of happy memories of fun and busy activity for the interested girls. Seniors Juniors G.A.P.C. President . . . . ..,, Pauline Karney .. ..Victoria Sowal .. . .. Even though their lives were filled with activity, they real- ized the wonderful relief of music and showed their love for singing by rehearsing at 8 A.M. and after school. Community groups, such as the P.M.A., P.T.A., Senior Women's Club, and church clubs were among those for whom they performed. A special party and entrance in the forensic league competition were especi- ally memorable and full of fun. Mixed choir has proved that work really gains the desired ends. Students have learned, besides music, to follow directors, an appreci- ation of music-and patience fgained from drudgery workj. A spectacular experience was evolved as they spent the day as Arnold High's guests in preparation for the annual Allegheny Choral Festival. Christmas, Spring Festival, forensic league competition Qwith Darlin' as the required numberj, a Kiwanis program, Christmas caroling and a party were also on the agenda. McDonough BAND, MAJORETTES AND COLOR GUARDS Four rim shots . . . and here they come- down' the field to the strains of a rousing march, precisely stepping off the yards and sounding every note. It is the Springdale High School Band under the able direction of Mr. Wareham, assisted by Mr. Strohecker. The band attended camp this summer at Blue Knob State Park, sponsored by the Par- ents' Music Association. Appearances were made at every football game and home bas- ketball game plus many concerts and parades, specifically-Spring Festival, Allegheny Val- ley Combined Concert, Miners' Day Parade, Kennywood, Decoration Day Parade. Senior awards and a banquet were made possible through the selling of chocolate bars by the P.M.A. Leading the band were the snappy color guards. Carrying the banner and guarding the flag, a strictly military outfit were they. Num- bering nine, these girls, led by Barbara Mc- Donough, did a fine job. High stepping majorettes were the main feature at half time shows during football and basketball seasons. Practice makes per- fect would have been an appropriate motto. Each day after school these girls could be found drilling in the band room to the music of a wire recorder. Specialty numbers during the year included, Mambo Jambof' What- ever Lola Wants, Rock Around the Clock, and Hamboogie, plus various other ever- popular tunes. The high stepping twirling corps was a welcome sight each Friday night. SENIOR MAY QUEEN AND KING C. Crytzer, K. Hall. MAY DAY The pinnacle of the school year is the fes- tive yet dramatic May Day celebration. An annual tradition, it is held the first Friday in May and its popularity is evident judging by the over capacity crowd in attendance. As the familiar strains of Pomp and Cir- cumstancev resounded throughout the gym the entrance of the royal procession was awaited with bated breath. In a matter of minutes, the demure yet regal ladies of the court, gorgeous in their pastel and white bouf- fant gowns, attended by their poised, hand- some escorts, crossed the stage into a wonder- land of colorful pageantry. Then came a feel- ing of hushed suspense as the new royal couple, Linda Couch and Dave Lewis, re- ceived their respective crowns from the re- tiring majesties, Carol Crytzer and Kenneth Hall, an impressive scene, heart warming and beautiful. The dances and entertainment that followed to pay homage to the Queen and her Court was a pleasure to all, both audience and stu- dents participating, and was the climax of weeks of intensive training and planning by the faculty sponsor, Miss Nitsche. Patricia Bo- harch, as the able Mistress of Ceremonies and Dawn McClowry, playing the piano score, completed the picture. In its entirety, May Day 1956 was quite outstanding, one long to be remembered. SENIOR MAY COURT Front Row--J. Dunmyre, J. Lodi, J. Clawson, P. Caro. Back Row-P. Ribisl, K. Scholtz, J. Pikulin, R. One of the main events on the cheer- leaders' calendar was their annual dance, the Big Orange. Crowded to capacity, the gym was pleasantly decorated in the foot- ball theme, with a huge paper-mache foot- ball as the center of attraction. Being a successful event, the cheerleaders netted a satisfying profit besides an evening of fun. All of the cheerleaders thoroughly en- joyed their convention at Shippensburg, where they learned many new cheers and methods of performing along with meeting numerous friends from other schools. To top off a great season, the girls bought black corduroy jackets to enhance their trim uniforms. Deserving of praise, the cheerleaders and their energetic sponsor, Miss Nitsche, in the opinion of SHS, were considered. The Best? JUNIOR VARSITY CHEERLEADERS Front Row-S. Lockerman, E. Section play included five wins and five losses, re- sulting in a tie for a third place standing with West Deer. Coach DeVenzio worked long and hard with the starting five, usually seniors, to develop new plays. The hours of practice paid off for the team which made a very good showing against teams with greater height. The Junior Varsity team fared almost as well with the season proving their success by eight wins and thirteen losses. Under the line coaching of Mr. Turley, the boys played a good, clean game of ball and displayed unusual scoring and defensive abilities. Under the capable coaching of Mr. DeVenzio, the team showed they were a spirited ball club. After winning five out of the seven games, they were tied for the section playoff with West Deer. Springdale turned out to be the better team for the score was a close five to four. Although defeated in their first W.P.I.A.L. game by Shaler, with a score of eight to two, the baseball team won section honors and made every Springdale student a proud one. This has been the position of the golf team of 1955 in Springdale High School. Graduation along with a tough schedule hampered the young team throughout the year. The team did get off to a good start by defeating Arnold, but proved that the old adage, experience is the best teacher and inexperience is not, was true. Their team spirit left the golfers with a memorable season, although every game wasn't a victory. Special recognition should be given to the team's fine coach, Mr. Wagner, who has been turning out improved teams each year. 71 SPORTS SHOTS OF ALL SORTS Top Row-K. Sleppy in action: KI. BRENDA MCCURDY PATRICIA PATULA Co-Editors 74 SENIOR FAREWELL S if 4' vi t S744 To you, our friends, a fond farewell and God speed us on our wayg these are some of the thoughts that race through our minds as we approach the first actual crossroads of our lives-graduation from high school. For twelve years we have moved forward together with one intent toward this eventful day and now we go our separate ways. The future either looms or glows before us as we step into the world as potential members of society, the viewpoint depends upon us. To some it will mean the end of formal education as they are absorbed by the local industries and to others it will mean more learning in various specific fields to attain a greater goal. We sincerely hope that we have added to the honor and fame of our Alma Mater and that the memory of our class will be a good and happy one in spite of our deficiencies. Our wish to the classes which follow in our footsteps is that they learn to better appreciate the value of their opportunity to study here in a free land, think as they will and be what they choose. This, along with health, happiness and success in all their undertakings comes straight from the heart as the entire cast of the Class of '56 takes its final bow off that stage of life called Springdale High School. 75 ACTIVITIES Band, Majorettes and Color Guards ..,..,,......,,.,..,..,..,..,......... 58-9 Camera Club .,.,..... .,.,. 5 5 Choral Groups Ensemble ........... ..,..
