However, your graduation is the real beginning of your life as responsible citizens. Your schooling has been only preparation for world citizenship. If through your high school years you have gained the wisdom and foresight to take your rightful places in the world, the aims of your teachers and adminis- trators have been realized. It is my sincere wish that every senior may look back upon his high school days with pride for his accomplishments-moral, social, scholastic and physical. The effort and under- standing of the teachers have produced learned stu- dents and good citizens. They have stressed not only the educational phase of schooling, but the social as well. We know these thoroughly educated men and women as teachers in class and friends outside of class. All extra curricular activities have been sponsored by our faculty. The success of any school depends upon its teachers, and we have the cream of the crop. 13 SENIORS It seems like only yesterday we were Sophomores, and here we are now, Seniors. As we look back, we recall many fond memories of the things we did and the good times we've had. The Sophomore, Junior, and Senior class parties, with their barbecues and hot dogs, were evenings of fun. As juniors, we sold peanut brittle to make money for the Prom, which turned out to be a big success. The Prom was held at the Hill Crest Country Club. The music was furnished by Baron Elliot. Our Senior year was one of hard work. Magazines had to be sold to make money for the Yearbook. Adver- tisements and Reader's Digest were also sold to help finance the ELECTRA. Bake sales fur- nished us with a few dollars. Easter candy was sold to make money for our Class Banquet. We held our Banquet at the Paragon on May 18. We enjoyed a delicious chicken dinner and fine entertainment afterwards. The Banquet was held instead of the usual classnight. Bacca- laureate, May 23, was a very solemn occasion for us. Listening to the speakers, we suddenly realized the importance of our high school edu- cation. Then came the big night-May 25- Graduation. We were supposedly grown up and ready to go out to earn a living for ourselves. Could we do it? Many changes had to be made and many obstacles had to be met, but we felt we could. We sponsored dances after the basketball games, put on the Class Play, and sold peanut brittle to bring in money for this big event. On the night of May 21, 1954, we danced to the dreamy music of Baron Elliott's orchestra at the Hill Crest Country Club. Our class officers have done a swell job. The fun we had at the Class Party will always be remembered. We look forward to our senior year. OFFICERS President ...,....... .A ......... ...,....... , . ..,. ELECTRA With the banging of typewriters, clicking of cameras, and the scratching of heads, the work for our ELECTRA was completed. After school and nights, our members worked hard combining their efforts and ideas to make our year- book one of the best. Never-ending work had to be completed by all committees, as the business committee was busy with our money-making projects, the literary and sports committees busy writing articles, the typing committee typing these articles, and the art and photography committees working hard for their part. Co-operation and hard work finally finished our ELECTRA . . . although a hard struggle, we have attained our goal, and will have our memories in our 1954 ELECTRA . . . and so, another ELECTRA has been published. 36 These competent staffs BUSINESS STAFF Left to right-N. Among its various projects were the annual Snow Ball Dance and Talent Show. As in pre- vious years, representatives of our council along with their sponsor, Mrs. Hendrickson, attended the National Convention of Student Councils. This year it was held in West View, Pennsylvania. While at the convention, they attended a lecture given by Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee. All members of Student Council worked hand in hand with the community leaders. So at the end of the school year, the council is adjourned only to begin all over again next year. They entertained us at the football and basketball games and presented their best music at the Combined Band Concert and at the Spring Festival. The trip to Penn State certainly was eventful, even though the weather knocked the schedule hay-wire. Their hard- earned awards were given out at the Band party and everyone enjoyed a Wonder- ful meal at the annual Banquet. Then there were parades, the Band picnic, competition at Kennywood and other events that kept Mr. Wareham and his bunch quite busy. We all greatly appreciate the fine work that our Springdale High School Band has done this year. DANCE BAND Small, but certainly not dull, is our Dance Band. The many practices resulted in excellent performances. Without a doubt, we'll soon be recognizing these fine musicians on tour with some big-name bands. Row l, l. to r.-J. Pitlock, M. Roda. They can always be found at the field or the band room practicing hard for their next performance. Under the direction of our head majorette, Marcella Pinchok and assistant head majorettes, Dorothy Bos- sola and Nancy Gobert, the group of girls always had their routine to perfection. Hard work, long practices, and well done could be said about our Majorettes. HEAD MAJORETTE hd. Pinchok COLOR GUARDS Always at the head of our band are our Color Guards. They can be seen marching at any basketball or football game and leading parades. Spent much time with the band drilling for competition. COLOR GUARDS Row l. l. to r.ffD. lrt-land. A. Malcrnalc. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY Selected by the Junior Class for their play was a rollicking comedy entitled, Men Are Like Streetcarsi' The play had to do with the whimsical schemes and techniques of Maudie Mason. Maudie's main plot was to marry off her older sister, Sylvia. She pro- ceeds to get in and out of trouble during the course of the play, but in the end she proves to be the pride and joy of everyone. Miss Sober deserves a great deal of thanks for her grand help and support in directing this play. Included in the cast were: Maudie Mason. ...,....,............. Under the fine direction of Miss Gerino and with the co-operation of all those who participated, the play was really successful. The main character was Linda Rogers and she really was a character. In the process of growing up, she wasn't by any means a sweet, shy, young girl as most people would think. Instead, she was a girl who said what she wanted and didn't care how her enemies were treated. Adding a great deal of laughter to the play was Nadine, a friend of Linda's. After quite a bit of trouble and struggle, the play ended. As usual, the Senior play was a huge success. The characters in the play were: Linda Rogers , ,. ,.... The girls are wear- ing their gorgeous pastel gowns while the boys are dressed in their best attire. The Dance Band breaks out with the same refrain as the retiring court makes their appearance on the floor. The senior girls are dressed in their attrac- tive white gowns while their partners are looking their very best. Next comes the big event of the crowning. Both monarchs step proudly up to their seats of royalty with their attendants following. After the crowning, their majesties are entertained with various colorful dances. Following the enter- tainment, a ball was given in honor of our Queens, Kings and their courts. The whole event was beautiful and will always be a wonderful memory to us all. 54 but they are happy ones. K' eaxg Q5 1 SENIOR MAY COURT M. Pinchok, M. Pinchok, N. Raynovich, P. Bott, A. Galcik, S. The Dynamos downed East Deer for their first win as Lil Caro ran for the only score. Springdale suffered their first loss of the season to Aspinwall, but came back and walloped Tarentum and Plum, as Hvizdos and Carion showed great form. Leechburg was superior over Springdale, but the Dynamos came back to whip Arnold. Brentwood, Ford City, and Free- port took advantage of Springdale, but the Dynamos came charging back to win over Shaler, and ended with a respectful 500 average for the season. Football season was opened with a rousing pep meeting followed by the Big Orange and the traditional Snake Dance. The cheerleaders founded at this time our new Pep Club, which is the first in the history of Springdale High School. Before we realized it, basketball season was upon us. Many nights were spent in preparing a junior Varsity squad of cheerleaders to help root our Junior Varsity team on to victory. This, too, was a new organization for our Alma Mater. We all have high hopes for our players to do their best. When the ref calls, Timeout,l' it means time to get together and cheer for our boys. Let's Go Team. This year, one of our finest basketball players, Bob Branzet, broke the school scoring record with 51 points. Last year it was held by John Killian who scored 35 points in one game. Arnold defeated Springdale this year in a do-or-die battle. The score was 48 to 44. It was the same score that Springdale lost to Vandergrift last year in the playoff at Pitt Field House. Maybe our team did not come out in first place, but we are still proud of our boys. They came out with winning nine league games and losing five. Coached by Mr. DeVenzio, the boys were able to go through their section unbeaten. Lost from last year's ball club are shortstop, Fred Heimbuecher and out- fielders, Joe Medred and Nick Pinchok. Returning will be two of the Finest pitchers and catcher in W.P.I.A.L., Nick Raynovich, Lou Kun, and Tom Tabacek. Also returning are the hitters on last year's ball club. They are John Romanco, Len Vincler, and Ray Carion. The boys will be trying to make this year's ball club into another section winner. With a few breaks they might have an even better season than that of last years section winner, which is to say a lot for the boys that will be playing this year. Now we leave to find success, To achieve our goal of true happiness. As time bells chime we like to hear, This song, our song, the Fifty-Fourth Year. School mates, school dates, are in our hearts, We know school's out, it's time to part. How we long just to remain, Wishing times and friends could be the same. Farewell, farewell, to all our friends, Some day, somewhere, we'l1 meet again. 78 THE LAST FAREVVELL Ovd 4- - 1..'-'- :, Qi' -. '.:.qL'.
