With this in mind, Electra ,-45 has attempted to portray school life from kindergarten to the last, the Senior year. May it remind you of familiar scenes and faces, revive old memories, and cause you to wonder what has transpired with those who are pictured Within these pages. May it cause you to forget the World's worries and cares as you glance through its pages and recall to your mind the many pleasant days and events of long ago. 1 three four DEDICATION In appreciation, We, the members of the Senior Class of Springdale High School, of the year 1945, gratefully dedicate Electra '45 to the members of the Classes of 1945 and 1946 who are, and who will be, serving their country in some branch of the armed services. 1 To those alumni who have made the supreme sacrifice, we pledge our unfailing love and devotion for the valor, fortitude, and devotion to duty that they have exhibited. Their sacrifice has not been in vain. Their names will be honored as long as We exist, for it is only by their efforts that We are privileged to enjoy the four freedoms. 7 R JAMES ALLEN EARL BARBEL JAMES BUZARD DONALD CAMPBELL CHARLES COLBORN THONIAS DOWNING JAMES FENN HOWARD HOGAN ALBERT HRABOVSKY CHESTER LAWRENCE NORIXIAN LAWSON JOHN TROYAN BILL BODICH BILL GIEFORD ARMED FORCES SENIORS MARK LENTZ RAY MCCOY FRANK MCGEARY BILL MORATH JOE PATTERSON PETE PAULOVICH STEVE PETARA ERWIN SCHNAUHUBER BILL SUTCH CARL VOSKAMP BILL WILSON JUNIORS JOE MURRAY LOUIS FORCES BILL GARRIGAN SOPHOMORES Addison Yute W I HI ARNOLD BOWERS MELVIN BRENNAN ROBERT DAVIS FRED DONN ER WILLIAM HALL CHARLES HENKE GEORGE ANDREXN' HUSAR MIKE KLIMENKO WILLIAM LODI PAUL MELLON JOHN MIDDLEMAS FRANK NAGY IN MEMORIAM JULIUS NENIITZ EDVVARD R. Time was when we were only Freshmen-but that seems years and years ago. Remember the good old daysll when you could go to a dance and expect to have a few of the mfellasn partici- pate? That was the year of the Freshie Frolic, and the weekly practice dances. After getting accustomed to the daily jaunt up to Mt. Colfax, we settled down to adjust our- selves to Senior High conditions and to get used to being called Sophomores. We werenlt idle for long. We turned out bag and baggage for HThe Military Ballf' Then, while we were still talk- ing over the oddities of 'Hhigh school fashionl' dancing, somebody popped up with the Eool's Frolicf' We were really set back on our heels and everybody had a bang-up time-one we'll not soon forget. Nineteen forty-three was our year to howl. VVe started off with the cheerleaders' seasonal dance, The Big Orange. Then came that dance to top all others - the Sadie Hawkin's Dance where it was Hevery man for himself. NIany of our evenings were taken up in practices for the Junior Class play, Plane Crazy. Then, at the end of the term, we were all wound up with planning and preparing for The Prom. The first thing we knew, we were riding home from Kennywood on the trolley and our Junior year was at its end. After the summerls vacation, which most of us spent doing our little bit to win the war, we came back to our last year on the Hilltop.', Every so often weld pause in our studies to wish some departing Senior a fond farewell as Uncle Sam called and our Senior boys answered. VVe held our Senior dance as usual at the school, with lVIr. Wilson and his boys providing the music. Then came our Senior Class play, Best Foot Forwardf' The Prom, this year, was held at the Hillcrest Country Club. The end of the year was fast approaching and soon came the saddest events of all - Baccalaureate Services at the United Presbyterian Church and Commencement Exer- cises at the Springdale Athletic Field. There will be no more classes for us-no more trudging up the hill, no more D. T., no more silence when 'fthe voice comes on with, UMay I have your attention, please ?', No, this is all past for us be- cause we are the Graduating Class of 1945. We no longer have to climb a hill-from now on itls a ladder - a ladder with mighty weak rungs. Whether we get to the top or not is up to us alone. So goodbye to you, Mt. Colfax. Throughout the year we had many activities, such as the play, Juniors Mustachef, and the Bunny Hopl' with music furnished by the school orchestra. Our days as Freshmen soon came to an end and we looked forward with anticipation to our future at Springdale Senior High School. September seventh, 1943, found one hundred and ninety-five eager students appearing at their Alma Mater once more. Since this was the first day at Senior High, everyone felt a little strange. It wasn't long, however, before we became accus- tomed to finding our way around the school and made ourselves welcome CU in all gatherings. We didn't lag in attending social events and had lots of fun at the Sophomore Saint Patrick's Day Dance. This year came to an end too soon, but We consoled ourselves that it wouldn't be long until we would be Juniors. Again, a seventh of September found us climb- ing the road to the towering heights of Mt. Col- fax. Now, accustomed to the rules and regula- tions, we were looking forward to a new and interesting time. Football season started with a great ado. Some of the most prominent stars of the season were Juniors, such as: Lieskovsky, Mazalc, Wenzel, Chlodney, Hussar, Krugle, Smolara, and Lenosky. Basketball season found several Juniors battling along with the Seniors. We were very proud that Cochran and Ambrose helped to win the Section V championship. The Junior Class Play, Hunt Susie Shoots Ilze Iflforkf. was very successful and the Cast toured the Valley High Schools to give their performance. Snyder, Shouse, Weidel, Kuhn, Nlazur, Ring, Heasley, Sleppy, Leskovic, Schohn, and Acker worked hard to make the play successful. The Blay Day Pageant was the next outstand- ing event on the calendar, and Dorothy Kust was chosen from the Junior Class to reign as Queen of 1945. ln her Court of Honor were Martha Mitas, Edna Grace Kuhn, Lorraine Kaczlcowski, and Edna Helen Kuhn. Though this was an im- portant occasion, it did not detract attention from the JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM, which was held at the Hillcrest Country Club, on lXIay 11, 1945. These events closed the yearls activities and it was with regret that we watched this year come to a close. September, 1945, means the beginning of the end for the Class of 1946, for it is then that we reach our goal - high school commence- ment. We will remember all the joyous days we spent as students in Springdale High School. jUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS ANDREVV CHLODNEY ........ Vice President ANTHONY CUTRARA ....,,...... Service SOPI-ICDMORE CLASS HISTORY It was a beautiful September day in the Fall of 1943 when we came to Springdale Junior High as Freshies. School Street School looked like the door to Heaven that first day, remember? Boy. weren't we shy? No one seemed to know anyone else and yet there was a feeling of friendship which none of us shall ever forget. There were five 9th grade classes and we all were down to work sooner than we thought possi- ble. Everything was different and we all seemed to enjoy it a lot. Soon things really began to p0p.', VVe gave several very funny plays in assem- bly and held several dances. One was the f'Freshie Dancef' so we naturally took great pride and interest in that particular one. The month of May came and We did our best to make May Day successful. The four chosen to represent the Freshman Class were Dorothy Hegedus, Yolanda Spinelli, Evelyn DeBolt, and Vivian Hall. The rest of the Freshmen took an imaginary trip around the world and portrayed the Scotch Lassies in their festive dancing, the Yugoslavian boys in their daily calisthenics and they even performed an old-fashioned Barn Dance that is characteristic of the American farmer. After the school picnic, a long vacation loomed ahead. So, the summer passed and fall appeared at last. Into the halls of Springdale Senior High trooped the Sophomores ready for Whatever might befall them in this new life. We may have ap- peared green to the upper classmen but I some- how don't think we were. In no time we were not only part of the school but it was part of us. During football season Sophomores Joe Kuchta and Bob Murdock took several bows for their expert performances. Then came not only National Election but Scholastic Election as well. Our four Sophomore Home Room groups chose the following officers: President Vice President 10-A Koleny Walsh IO-B D. Thompson B. Nickolas I0-C E. Pollick J. Kuchta I0-D J. Ochsenhirt M. Razelun Secretary-Treasurer H. Caputo B. Borland J. Dally M. A. Rayburg The Sophomore Class election was won by Vivian Hall 10-C, Presidentg Jean Fenn 10-D, Vice Presidentg and James Dally 10-C, Secretary Treasurer. Many Sophomore boys played on the Junior Varsity Basketball team. Among them were: Harry Caputo I0-A, Bill Ucinski 10-C, Earl Carroll IO-D, and Joe Kuchta 10-C. Then, many of our Sophomores enjoyed dancing. Anne Bonaz- za and Rose Gladowski, our Sophomore twins are the type that really 'fjitl' and they don't stop for anyone. Of course, Jean Fenn, Elaine Wein- berg, Betty Zanandrea, and many others are also in on the jitterbugginf If it's something slow and kind'a sentimental, you'll find the Sophomore glamour boy, Bob Borland, dancing with some girl, or other. Something new is always awaiting us, and as Spring showed its colors, we found preparations being made for the festival of lllay. Yes, May Day came and many Sophomore girls, in beautiful pastel gowns, were seen dancing to the strains of the l'Anniversary waltzl' for the entertainment of queen to be and the retiring queen. Finally we came to school on the last day and were given our report cards. Perhaps some of us are reluctant to leave, as we say goodbye, but we know that fall will come only too soon and we anticipate three months of sunshine and fun be- fore we will return as S. H. S. He is Springdale's only two-letter man, hav- ing won the Varsity Letter in football and basketball. THOMAS LESKOVIC-A'Lesko play- ed tackle and along with Joe Dattola played havoc with many enemy plays. He is getting a scholarship for his ability and is certain to make good on some college team. .mmf Mk IAMES BUZARD- Jim was one of Springdale's flashy backs. He played at halfback and together with the other backs formed Springdale's attacks. CHRISTOPHER DATTOLA - Joe played tackle and in any game was one of the men which all the other teams feared. He was one of the anchors of the Springdale line and was responsible for many enemy losses. HAROLD DEIBLER- Dipes played guard and although he was ours for his first and last year he was a big help in bolstering the line. Dipes is a two letter man getting the football letter and a band letter. FRANK MCGEARY - A'Foo played tackle and was 'johnny-on-the-spot to fill in when his turn came. He was a very great help to the team as a whole. PETE PAULOVICH - Pete played halfback and was on the receiving end of many complete passes. Some of these passes were responsible for gains which led to final victory. THOMAS RUKAVINA-Tom played fullback and was directly responsible for winning the East Deer game. His drive and stamina broke through many enemy lines and brought home our victories. GEORGE LIESKOVSKY - George played guard and played this position so well that he was voted the most valu- able player on the Springdale team. He is also getting a scholarship along' with Tom and these two are certain to bolster some college team. CARL VOSKAMP-f'Vossey was an- other of our flashy backs, and with his running and punting got old Springdale out of many a jam. His spirit will be greatly missed in the backfield in following years. l aww, 'Ta fsieilf f '15, wh 11.1 5 M, ..- A ' j.. 3 ' - - -, -:IF A fl 1 - W . Although he did not shoot many bask- ets, his score Compared favorably with the others. His value to the team was emphasized when the going got tough and he could be depended upon to come through with the right play. He en- tered tbe Vnited States Coast Guard upon eompletifri of the season's play- riffs. VINUENT NIIYRUN - Vince was a substitute center and was very effective at this position. l-le has played basket- ball for four years, starting with Jun- ior High. Although he did not play a regular position, he could be counted on to come through in an emergency. EDXVARD AMBROSE-lid is one of our outstanding basketball players, He was high scorer in the Allegheny Val- ley this year, his Junior year. He keeps the game at an even pace and has always made more than his share of points. He is expected to do even better in the 1945-46 campaign. DEAN CUCHRAN-Another junior who has earned the position of being one of our outstanding guards is Dean. He has played basketball for two years and ought to he the spark plug in the Power City Five next season. He is one of the very few six-footers on the team and this should be of great advantage to him in his playing the coming year. VVe look for great JOSEPH MISFTKA-This chap has filled the guard position in a very pleasing manner, This was appreciated beth by Coach Ripper and the mem- bers of the Squad. He specialized in long shots from the middle of the floor. He was known to everyone as Shimo. ALBERT OYVCAR-As co-captain of the Varsity, Arch proved to his team mates and the basketball fans that team- work is essential to a team's success. His insistence upon this trait resulted in the 'fPower City Quint becoming champs in their district. Arch played the center position and proved to be one of the best centers in the Valley. STEVE PETARRA-Steve was very good at the forward position and as substitute guard he played many a fine game this season. He was exceptionally good at close shots and the team de- pended upon him in various tight spots. He left school immediately after the season ended to enter Uncle Sam's Navy. HARRY STRAVVOET - Chosen co- captain by his teammates was an honor Harry deserved because he worked for his teammates rather than for himself. He is one of the few who played basketball for four years. His specialty was playing the forward position and he helped to make things interesting. NORlN1AN LAXVSON - Although Norm was rather small in stature, his speed made up for what he lacked in height. This was his first year on the Varsity and he showed his worth by coming through when the going got tough. Uncle Sam sent him a call be- fore the School term ended. XVILLIAM XVILSON-Bill played the forward position for his first year as a Varsity man. He took an active part in all of the games and kept himself busy trying to outguess his opponent. Uncle Samls Army found a place for him. MR.
