That first school day, though long ago, remains in memoryg For even today that frightened child may now a senior he. The first, the second, and the third year grades went very fast Until the fourth, the fifth, and sixth had soon already passed. Though grown-ups of the grade school- my, how the time did Hyf They soon again were frightened youth that entered junior high. The seventh grade was easy: the eighth was not so hard. Interest centered around Charlie Hopps an Arkansas hillbilly. Ar the death of her father, she was thrust upon l'appa Larry, a young business man who was totally unprepared for this addition to his household. Unknown to anyone else Uncle Aleck Twiggs produced a large sum of money which he used to send Charlie to boarding school. After a period of eleven months Charlie and Uncle Aleck returned and Larry recognized his love for her. The way in which Larry unscramblcd the confusing circumstances in which he found himself, kept the audience in an uproar right up to the last curtain. Mrs. Clemons has directed either the Junior or Senior play each year since she has been in Spring- dale, and both play cast and audience have found that her directing insures a successful play. 36 unior may y I ,df EDM Tom Spark ,,.,,,,,... ,,,,Y., I immy Wilson Wally Allen ,,,,,,,,., ,,,,,, ,,,,,, H a rry Gladish Mom Avcrill ..........,. ,.,,,.,. This situation brings unhappiness to two other people: Wally's fiancee, who does not love him as she pretendedg and lvlona, the ugly-duckling-swan, who is secretly in love with Wally. With her aid, Wally, pretending that he has suddenly fallen in love with Moria, goes away, leaving Lark free to marry Roger. Wally's self-sacrifice brings happiness to allg the climax being that Wally realizes he loves Moiia and asks her to be his wifeg she finally accepts joyously. 37 enior gde Fmt! What fun going to school for us all except Iohn B. who cried the first day. 1938-There wasn't much that ha ened to us between the 1940 first and the third grade but ifiiially in the fourth grade we have just had our Hrst big chance-of course, the Operetta! Both Washington and Central participated in this Operetta. lack and the Magic Bean Stalk has proved to be a big success. -This year we are the rulers of our lower classmates, but it is also our last year to play each other in baseball and football as separate schools and to have our music festivals together. Guess we won't have any recesses in the morning and afternoon but just at noon. We won't get to play bear and other games anymore. Oh, well, we'll get to go to the big building anyway. Some of our new friends that we've added since the Ist grade are Monte Rae C., Bebe Dale H., Charles fDickiej E. in the 2nd, Reva Iune Ames in the 3rd, Patricia L. and Donald M. in the 4th, Harold S. and Sophanna W. in the 5th, Beverly Ann T., Maxine B., and lack H. this year. We must say goodbye to dear old Central and Washington. 1941-Here we are in Ir. High School at last. Now that we're getting acquainted we who came from Central are End- ing out that the kids from Washington are o.k. and vice-versa. Maybe we shouldn't have had all those fights. Today Joe Carroll B. was initiated in the Peppers Club while Frances Sue and Martha lean were repre- sentatives from the 7th grade as football maids. More friends are added this year, Bob S., Ieanne C., Helen W., and Raymond H. 1942-Today Bucky Crouch was elected president of 8A and Gene Mitchell 8B. leanne C. and Fay Marie S. were elected football maids. Iuanita L. and Georgia Mae were the new students during this year. l9431NOW we are in Senior High School and are still divided into two sections. 9A chose Iuanita L. as president, while 9B chose Fay Marie S. as president. 9C chose Paul Davis, and Mrs. Buford, Mr. Carter, and Mrs. Smith served as sponsors. Coming from several sur- rounding communities and various other places to attend Springdale High School are Dolores E., Annabel D., Betty C., Pauline B., Rose Eva D., Ioe G., Roy G., Jacqueline C., Fay L., Virginia H., Betty Io L., Harry A., Sara M., Virginia R., Donna Vanzant, Ray R., Iohn Hugh S., lack S., Kathleen S., Ralph W., Frances U., Gene T., and Ioe L. The spirit of cooperation displayed by its 60 members has probably never been equalled nor will it be easily surpassed in future years. There were three main objectives that the Peppers Club carried out during the year. These were to put on a good Homecoming, give the footballteam a banquet, and share in the work of the basketball tournament concession. Homecoming, an event of November 1, was a success due to the careful planning and work of the members. Probably one of the best Peppers Club-Football Banquets ever given, was held December 13, 1946 at the Dodson Memorial building with Rev. Paul Galloway as guest speaker. During the annual invitation tournament the members did their part in the concessions. Tribute should be paid here to the sponsor, Miss Shirley jones, under whose able guidance the Peppers Club can truly mark the past year as one of its banner years. 47 , 1 1 f' I , vm tra' 6' 'fe fi . Despite the lack of material, with only four returning lettermen and the services of one former G.l. the Springdale eleven won five games, lost four, and tied one. They scored 156 points to the opponents' 104. Placing third in the conference, Springdale placed Co-Captain Paul Davis, Left End, Iack O,Dell, Left Tackle, and Bobby Thomas, Quarterback on the All-Conference team and Kenneth Leslie, Center, received Honorable mention. The same three, Davis, O'Dell, and Thomas placed honors on All-State team. Ar the Peppers Club-Football Banquet, Coach Earl Voss announced that 18 mem- bers of the squad had earned varsity letters. The opening game of the season was a see-saw battle with Siloam Springs Panthers. Although the loss of Left Tackle OiDell, due to a car accident, handicapped the Bulldogs, the score was tied up 6-6 as the final gun sounded. Later in the season the Bulldogs suffered a 26-o defeat at the hands of the Fayetteville Bulldogs. The Bulldogs celebrated their Homecoming by a 48 to o defeat from the Rogers Mountaineers. The hardest fought game of the season was with the Ioplin, Mo., Eagles. The score had been tied up 6 to 6 for three quarters and the Bulldogs had staved off a touchdown threat by holding the Eagles for four downs within the eight yard line when a Bulldog punt was partially blocked and went out on the three yard line. The Bulldog line held for two downs and on the third down the Eagles rolled over to win the game I3 to 7. The Bulldogs came back in the last game of the season to revenge the earlier defeat by the Fayetteville eleven, winning the Turkey Day tilt I9-I3. galietgaf The 1946-47 basketball season was not the best of seasons, but was exceptionally good for the Bulldogs. Throughout this season they participated in five tournaments as follows: The Springdale Invitation Tournament in which the Bulldogs lost to Gentry in the semi-finals but placed Springston and Davis on the all-tournament team. The Holiday Tournament which was held at Rogers where the boys were eliminated by Huntsville in the quarter-Hnals. The Bulldogs were selected to play in the A.S.T.C. Tournament which was held at Conway. Davis, Springston, and Thomas were placed on the all-tournament team. The Springdale boys brought home first place honors. At the District Tournament the Bulldogs gave outstanding performances but were eliminated in the finals by the strong Van Buren Pointers. Thomas and Davis were placed on the all-tournament team. After recovering from an epidemic of infiuenza the Springdale ten were invited to the State Tourna- ment held in Little Rock but were eliminated in the first round by Pine Bluff. Co-Captains for the Springdale Basketeers this year were Bobby Thomas and Paul Davis. The Springdale High School is fortunate to have held so competent a coach as Earl Voss for three years, with hopes for more to follow. 52 Z?aaLefLL-if I W. Ik Iii.
