Student Council Activity and work were a major part of Student Council’s schedule. Student Council was made up of members from each class: the four officers, ten elected members, and student body officers. Meet- ings were held bi-weekly to discuss important school business and social events. An important school project was one between Spring Valley and Richland Northeast in the formation of the “Sword and Saber’’ trophy. After every Spring Valley and Richland Northeast football game, the winning team will receive the trophy. Student Council traveled to Pawley’s Island in October for their first of two workshops. They spent three days getting to know each other, learning parliamentary procedure, and having a good time. A ski weekend in the Appalachian Mountains was planned for January. To start the year off, a cookout was held for the members of the Key Club and Z-Club. Throughout the year fund-raising activities such as the candycane sale before Christmas break were held to raise money for club functions. A portion of the money raised was used to sponsor a shopping spree and lunch at Columbia Mall for senior citizens of the Columbia area. The Z-Club came up with many original ideas in the aspects of club functions this year and helped to set a tradition of excel- lence to be carried forth into Spring Valley’s second decade. 30 President — Mollianne Carlen Vice-President — Rachel Carr Secretary — Jenny Llewellyn Treasurer — Tracey Lannigon Senior Representative — Cindy Beam Junior Representative — Carmen Lewis Sophomore Representative — Andrea Crim Debbie Burchell Anne Crosby Deneen Dunphy Melanie Graham Victoria Ellison Angel Ferguson Kathy Hollis Denise Jennings Mary Madcharo Janet McCollum Kim Masek Anne McDonagh Vera Meadows Pam Montgomery Ramona Ogden Jennifer Nicholson Becky Rogers Sally Smith Bonnie Stern Sherri Vannort Marcia DeMoya Nancy Garcia Pam O’Connor Betsy Boatwright Jill Delozier Barbara Cathey Sally Boatwright Darlene Hulen Terri West Bonnie Walker Laura Walker Kathy Williams Mary Easterling Renee Perreault Kim Bretlinger Fran Bolin Daphne Byrd Karen Carmichael Robin Caywood Debbie Coates Donna Goad Vonda Harrell Monica Harison Lavern Jones Kim Ricksecker Edie Smyrl Wilma Wallace Karen Collins Dianne Condra Amy Falter Marylee Koty Wendy Woods Jennifer Dees Tricia Herndon Kim Artlip Cali Almond Jan Steele 1. Wright and host- ing and performing a “Winter Guard Exhibi- tion.” The Viking Band ended their year with a 5-day, 5-night Spring Trip to Daytona Beach to compete in national competition. The band stayed in a beach motel, competed in concert. Jazz Rock and field show events and visited Disney World before returning to Columbia. 42 The Viking Band held a very busy schedule this year. The big musical of the year was the Talent Show presented by the Music Department on November 10th. This year’s musical gave many students an opportunity to do their own “act” as Chris Free became New York’s newest talent agent. The Spring Valley Chorus and Singers performed in the annual programs at Columbia Mall, for the local service clubs, in All-State Chorus, and participated in the Solo and Ensemble Festival. After working for three years for the blazers, the Singers hope to plan a big musical tour for next year. Impressive 12-1 Record Spring Valley was very proud of the 1979 tennis team. The girls played well this year which was illustrated by their winning season and by their showings in the regional and state tournaments. Coach Greg Owings was proud of the team and said that although the team had to replace four of their top six players, he felt from the season’s opener that the team would fare well this year. The team’s most outstanding matches were played against Cardinal Newman. Richland Northeast, and Columbia High Schools. This year’s top play- ers were Joy Frazier, Mollianne Carlen, Susan Mishoe, Ashley Britt, Melanie Carlen, and Donna Pierce. 93 Volleyball Team Says, FIRST ROW: Wilma Wallace. Michelle Boyd. This year has been a rebuilding one for volleyball at Spring Valley due to the loss of five players to graduation last year. The young team suffered many losses, but despite these setbacks they worked hard at improving skills required for a superior team. Returning to coach the Spiking Vikings was Genny White. Coach White felt that the biggest barrier the girls faced this season was the lack of experience in working together as a team. The co-captains of the 1979 Volleyball team were Arlene Montgomery and Wilma Wallace. The top players were Monica Harrison, Jennifer Loo- mis, Sharon Campbell, Lori Treiber, and Lisa Ban- nister. Gloria Bell and Christy Dixon managed the team with Nancy Waite as scorer. 94 “Wait ’Til Next Year.” oiv G o I. The 1979 Girl’s Volleyball team. 2. Sharon Campbell sets up the ball. 3. The team ran in twelve meets over courses which averaged about three miles in length. Coach Jerry Sanders, who had coached girl’s cross-country in previous years, also coached men’s cross- country for the first time this season. He felt that this was a rebuilding time for the team. Coach Sanders also stated that while the team’s defeats were discouraging, the individual members were running some of their best times. This year’s cross-country team was made of Henry O’Boyle, Tim Haight, Chris Eaker, Darrell Munn, Bert Lazaro, Brad Luce, Jim Allen, and Steve Smith. The girl’s cross-country team also participated in many meets this year but was still in the building stage. Under the direction of Coach Lee Koty, the Vikings were a very dedicated team. While playing in the toughest region in the state, the team employed a very deliberate and steady game plan that usually allowed them to control the tempo of the game. This years's team had three seniors: guards, Chris Eaker, Rodney Griffin and Phillip Harris. 98 Builds For Future . The 1979-80 Varsity Basketball Team: KNEELING: Willie Marvin. Mike Whitehead. The Spring Valley girls have played well this sea- son despite the fact that they’re outsized and not as experienced in team play as other schools in the region. Coach Greg John- ston has said that the girls are quick and hopes that they will play better as a team before the season is finished. This sea- son’s starters were Vicki Greene, Lorraine Geiger, Arlene Mont- gomery, Anne Boyd, and Stephanie Wilson. Coach Greg Johnston felt that their best games were played against Eau Claire, who they defeated and Camden, although they didn’t win. The J.V. team was a young one, but they had a good attitude and tried hard to win. Many people do not understand the scor- ing system for collegiate type wrestling, so they do not come to the matches. How- ever, the scoring system is simple. The two wrestlers have three two-minute per- iods to wrestle. Each move done success- fully gains a certain point value. The wres- tler with the most points at the end of the three periods is the winner. The wrestler’s score is then added to the team score. Wrestling is a very interesting sport and the team members really appreciate stu- dent support. This year was the first year the team has had cheerleaders. The girls proudly defeated all of their other competitors including two wins over Richland Northeast. Softball practice began in February under the careful guidance of Head Coach Greg Owings and Assistant Coach Janet Hoffman. Coach Owings stated that he was proud of the hardworking team and their excellent record. “They were a good group of girls who matured greatly as a team during the sea- son.’’ Coach Owings felt that the team played an especially good defensive game throughout the season. The Lady Vikings senior players were Captain Karen Kemper, first base: Bonnie Reyn- olds, who scored the most runs; outfielder Barbara Reynolds, who had the most hits; second baseman Liz Chandler, one of the most versatile players: and left fielder Erin Davis who was the leadoff batter. The other starters were shortstop Lisa Barboza, home run leader Dianne Lovett, catcher Karen Collins and pitch- er Tina Tindal. Conceived by A.P. G.S. History students studying under Mrs. Mary Corley and sponsored by the Social Studies Department, the event was de- signed to let students express themselves concerning perhaps the most dangerous situation in recent years. A letter of protest to the Iranian captors was drafted by students, and over 900 concerned Vikings signed it. Many Christmas cards for the hostages were collected and sent to the American Embassy in Teheran. Students demonstrated their protest by wearing white armbands around school during the day. Through- out the week, students took part in “dress-up days.” filling the school with a variety of hats, buttons, jerseys, suits, and tacky outfits. A number of contests were held during the week including: tele- phone-booth cramming, spinach-eating, and dog-barking contests. The highlight of the week was the Homecoming Parade. Sparkleberry Lane was full of floats, cars, and crowds of spirited students. During halftime at the football game, Loraine Gei- ger was crowned Homecoming Queen, with her court, Cindy O’Farrell and Aimee Dubose. Homecoming Week proved to be one of the highlights of the entire school year. Classic and time-tested styles were the emphasis of this year’s fashions. The “prep” look dominated, causing a bumper crop of button-downs, blazers, sweaters, and penny loafers for both sexes. Girls’ wool skirts and knee-high socks marked a regression to the collegiate look of the very early ’60s. Disco-related themes added excitment to clothes for night-life, while Western and English styles influenced some clothes. Golf and tennis clothes became a part of warm-weather wardrobes. FASHIONS I. THE STATUS SYMBOLS STATE FAIR The State Fair, signaling the begin- ning of the Fall, attracted many stu- dents from the Columbia area. Nights of rides, candied apples, games, exhibits, friends, and fun drew Spring Valley students throughout the week. The Fair proved to be one of the main events of autumn. 160 JOBS Many students at Spring Valley maintain jobs after school hours. Money acquired through these jobs is saved or used for recreation on the week- ends. Because of Spring Valley’s location in the growing Northeastern section, it is easy for stu- dents to find jobs in the community. Stores at Columbia Mall and other shopping centers employ many Vikings. Although it is hard to work, study and have fun at the same time, many students think the rewards are worth the challenge. 1. Vera Mead- ows lends a helping hand. 161 reserved Variety was the name of the music game this year. Many different styles, rhythms, and performers added to the wide range of the music scene. Disco, already branching out into different styles and approaches, had a dominant influence, with Donna Summer the un- deniable queen of the sound. Pounding rock, sentimental ballads, and upbeat country music also had a large impact. Several well-known groups, like Styx, the Eagles, and Led Zeppelin, released long-awaited albums. A number of new groups, like the Knack, were popular. Many groups, like Foreigner, Kansas, and the Cars were made more popular by concert appearances in Columbia. MUSIC He was a poor black sharecropper’s son who never dreamed he was adopted. STEVE Theaters were filled on weekends as Vi- kings went to see what proved to be the biggest hits of the season, movies ranged from com- edies. like The Jerk and 10, to more seri- ous ones like Kramer Vs. Kramer and Se- duction of Joe Tynan. Horror pictures like Alien and Amityville Horror drew crowds of viewers. The critically acclaimed Apoca- lypse Now was popu- lar, as were such light- er films as The Mup- pet Movie and 1941. Following the tradi- tion of Star Wars, sci- ence fiction films like Star Trek and Black Hole did well at the box office; even James Bond's latest adventure in Moon- raker was set in 164 The Human Adventure Is Just Beginning space. The movies once again proved to be a popular and en- joyable attraction. (Photo by Ken Busey) MOVIES 1 T THEATRES S THEY ROARED INTO BATTLE. ONLY ONE THING WAS MISSING...THE ENEMY. During each and every pep rally, the class competition was at its peak. As the Senior Class screamed “Seniors! Seniors!,’ the Juniors tried not to be outdone. Then the Sophomores and Freshmen joined in as the gym vibrated with noise. Yelling at the top of their lungs, the students sought recognition in spirit, unity and volume. At the foot- ball games and sports events, however, the classes united and cheered for the common element within them all — the pride of Spring Valley Vikings. 276 ACADEMICS Spring Valley High School has enjoyed a dec- ade of excellence. Spring Valley High has maintained the qual- ity which has made it one of the finest high schools in the state. The 1980 Saga Staff hopes that this yearbook has captured the true essence of our year through its pages and photographs and also hopes that our hard work has been successful in creating an enjoyable yearbook to hold your memories of the 79-80 school year. Kenny Evett The 1980 Saga was printed in the Clarksville. Tennessee printing facili- ties of Josten’s American Yearbook Company. The book involved a press run of 950 copies of 340 pages and was printed on 80 gloss enamel text pa- per. Typography in the book was pro- duced using the Korinna type family with 8 and 10 pt. Korinna bold for cap- tions and body copy: 18 and 36 pt. headlines. Some decorative type was set by the yearbook staff using For- matt and Presstype lettering. The cov- er of the 1980 Saga is a custom design applied by blind embossing the cover and applying a gold metallic foil to the molded design.
