46 PURPLE AND GOLD 1913 Seeley as eenter, Vvaller and Hauer forwards, and llavis, Sheldrew and Charnley guards. The players of 1911 were Waller eenter, Bauer and VVhitbeek forwards, Fleslier, Mumford and Sheldrew guards. llnder Prin. 0lson's eoaehing, the team went to Ellsworth fthe old rivalsl and defeated them on their own ftoor by a good seore. The boys all declared that revenge was sweet, and Ellsworth was not satisfied until they defeated ns in 1913. In the spring, traek work was taken up for the lirst time: Vap- tain Sheldrew won in the 3 mile eross eountry raee, in 19 minutes 50 seconds: l'etan was seeond, in Q1 ITllll1Ill'S -L3 seeonds. Uther members of the team were Mumford. Kirk, l,. Flesher, lsaaeson, VVhit- beek, ll. Flesher aint Logan. The Basket liall season of 1913 was oneof ups and downs. At times the team would show flashes of elass, only to slump baek into a deeided reversal of form. This laek of stability was due, no doubt, to the in- experienee of the boys. On the bright side, however, it may be said that the team eould get down to work: most important of all, the spirit of the boys was one of team work---eaeh man worked for the team re- gardless of his personal reeord, and it is sueh spirit that is absolutely essential to a ehampionship team. The outlook for next year is good, although the three seniors, Kirk, Davis and VVhitbeek, who graduate, leave positions hard to fill. Spring Valley started out with four inexperieneed men. 'l'o show their ability to improve, the Elmwood and Glenwood games may be mentioned. Elmwood defeated ns three times, and eame up in high hopes of doing it again but was ent short: due to the wood eo'u-hint' of I v ., 1 r, lrin. Olson, and the hard work of the boys, we beat them in the final wind-up 36 to 31. Glenwood eame down and playedt?1 The referee took all the privileges the rules allowed, and then set his huskies to work upon our light weights. Hut, owing to the fast team work of our boys, we man- aged to hold them down to 25 to 27. Fate was against us in not giving us a return game. The vietory that we believe would have been ours we leave to be won by the 1914- team. The most important as well as the most exeiting game of the season was played between the Seniors and the pick of the other elasses, mainly Sofa H . . . . l he boys ot the other elasses would not 1'91'0Q'I11Zt' our superiority in Basket Ball until we gave them a beautiful trimming. A great erowd assembled, and those that had any doubt as to the outeome of the game had their illusions dispelled the moment the ball was put in play. It was Seniors, Seniors, Seniors, ulltil the whistle blew. Our opponents. though heartbroken, eame baek the seeond half with fire in their eyes: but it was of no use. VVhen the final whistle blew
