SPRING VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL 41 Chapter Five HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC The chorus of the Spring Yalley High School was begun in the year of 1904 by Principal Keyes. The work was carried on along prac- tically the same lines that it is now. Some years there has been a mixed chorus, and other years a boys' glee club. They sang at the programs of the Literary Society and at times they entertained the school by giving a selection during the General Exercise period before noon. This year the chorus is composed of fourteen members, in- structed by Principal Olson. We meet regularly every Wednesday even- ing to train our voices for the entertainment of the public at Literary and other entertainments given by the High School. These meetings are enjoyed by all, and even the rain does not prevent our coming. The hours of practice are from 7:15 to 8:30, and most of the members make it a point to visit the candy stores before going, so that their throats will be cleared for singing. The hours are not late, so that plenty of time is left afterward for study. Some evenings it is necessary for the boys to practice first: and while waiting the girls often hold a quaker meeting in the laboratory. Florence and Aralda, two of our last year's star members, were able to be with us again this year, even tho they had finished their Iligh School work. We should like to have had the rest of our former members back, for we considered them all stars: but that was impossible, since they were not in town. Several songs have been sung by the chorus, but the ones which were prettiest and most difficult to master were Yesper Hells and The Old Guard. During the latter part of the year most of the time is spent in preparing songs for commencement and other entertainments given the last week of the school year. Since most of the good singers graduate with the class of 1913, it is rather questionable if next year's chorus will be as successful as this year's has been. The members of the present chorus are:- MABEI.
