HOMECOMING 88 Chris VanDenBerg and Amy VanDussen No one word can justly describe the emotion I felt when 1 1 was nominated to be on the Homecoming Court and later r elected queen. I was honored, touched and excited. Everyone: looks forward to the last Homecoming of their high school yean where collaborative planning helps develop a unity within the: senior class and a camaraderie between the other students. Itt was fun to watch and be part of the activities. It is and will be always one of my fondest memories of high school. Julie Jackoboice ' 881 Noelle, Playing in the mud again. 4 HOMECOMING COURT !k iP ruFHiiiifT ' l King Matt Walsh Vhenever your received by your peers in a pos- tive way you should feel good, so when I was ominated for homecoming court by the class of 88 , I was extremely happy. At first I was worried about leople thinking I would get a big head, but my riends and their King jokes made sure that lidn ' t happen. )verall I have lots of swell memories from high chool , but being homecoming king will be one hat I will never forget . Thanks. Matt Walsh Alan Perkins and Anne Bryson Julie lackoboice and Rick Manske HOMECOMING COURT 5 Homecoming What? 6 Homecoming left. Are you sure this is just a game? above. AAh a camera ! When it came to academics, Jose pursued a level of excellence that was far more strenuous than the average Laker. Jose spent many hours each day studying for honor classes such as physics. Chemistry II, calculus and human A P. At the end of the school year, Jose had achieved a phenomenal 4.67 grade point average. Jose ' s skills and hard work earned him the physics student of the year honors at the awards assembly as well as other acknowledgements. Jose also dove into the Laker sports scene with the same excitement as he did with his studies. Although not a starter, Jose managed to play on the varsity football team. When he wasn ' t on the field, Jose was a constantly spirited leader, keeping the other team members motivated. Hiroshi Yokoo came from Shiki, Japan. What interested him most was experiencing American teenage culture. The classes he liked the most were art and design. He said that he found these classes a lot different from his class in Japan because of the close relationship between Mr. Tiano and the students. Mr. Tiano really cares about his students and their opinions, explained Hiroshi. Hiroshi hopes one day to return to America as a businessman. want to be a permanent resident in the United States, Hiroshi said. If you would be interested in writing to Hiroshi, please send mail to: Hiroshi Yokoo, 3-21-11 Shikishi Nakamuneoka, 355 Saitama, Japan. 22 Louisa Niehenke is from Dusseidorf, Germany. Coming to America as an exchange student was the fulfillment of a goal made when she was in the sixth grade. Her experiences in the U.S. have been every bit as exciting and rewarding as she had hoped. Louisa ' s hobbies are tennis, golf and swimming. She participated in these sports on a recreational basis only, opting to try other things rather than organized school sports. Enjoying her stay immensely, Louisa hopes to one day return to visit her host family and the many friends she has made. I had a great year, and I ' m sure going to miss you all. Thanks for making the 1988 school year possible for me, said Louisa. Akiko Fujita is from Yokohama, Japan. She was very en- thusiatic about her stay in the United States because she was able to experience so many new things and activities. For Akiko, who has never seen snow before, skiing was a great challenge. Skiing was the most exciting sport I ' ve ever done! exclaimed Akiko. She joined the softball team and musical. Akiko tried out for the choir in her church too, not limiting her experiences only to school. With the church group, Akiko hoped to take a trip to New York, a place she had always wanted to see. After returning to Japan, Akiko will save her money for a trip around the world. Thank you everybody for everything, especially family and friends. I ' m so glad that I decided to come here! said Akiko. Inga Becker came from Gothenburg, Sweden. She came to America because she wanted to learn about a different culture than her own. She wanted to experience the American way of living. Inga traveled with a group of foreign exchange students to New York and Washington D.C. She also went to Boston with her host family. It ' s great to be able to see some other parts of your country. New York was great! said Inga. When she goes back to Sweden, she will have to complete her senior year in high school since her year in the U.S. doesn ' t count toward her graduation. She enjoyed her stay here, although she missed Sweden at times. Who knows, one day I might come back ... said Inga. Look Marci, a new chance. Try it. The women ' s volleyball team had an excellent season un- der the new coach, Sarah Bulthuis. They finished second in their conference behind Fremont and also advanced to the finals in regional play, losing a tough match to Big Rapids. The squad was led by five seniors, ail who will be pursuing their education at top colleges and one who will travel on a squad with a volleyball scholarship. The 1987-88 squad was a unique team that developed a special team unity and spirit that carried them through many close, grueling matches. Stamina was the team ' s strong point and a challenge was their spark plug. Too easy, try this step. 107 Junior Varsity Volleyball 108 a 5J i Rachelle Ballast Sami Adams c i . Across the Bridge Spring Lake 846-1000 Your senior portrait is special, and it should look it. Why should you limit yourself to the familiar head and shoulders look of the underclass school pictures you ' ve had for years, when you can have a senior portrait that is much more interesting and meaningful because it reflects your personality, interests and life style. Tennis lover Chris Jansiewicz wanted just such a portrait. So we decided to photograph her on the tennis court, but from an entirely new angle — twelve feet overhead! The result is a unique and compelling portrait of special significance. Chris ' s senior portrait is only one example of the exciting and different things we ' ve been doing for students from all over West Michigan. Whether you want an environmental portrait or a studio portrait, something tradi- tional or far out, we are the people to see. Let us create a special portrait of you!
