As far as possible be on gocxi terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they, too, have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit. If you com- pare yourself with others you may become vain and bitter; for always there will h e greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your career, how- ever humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is. Many persons strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. I Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disen- chantment, it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatique and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe; no less than the trees and the stars. You have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you contieve Him to be and whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confu- sion of life, keep peace with your soul. With all its shame and drudgery and bro- ken dreams, it is still a fjeautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. Found in Old St Paul ' s Church, Bilti , dited 1692 Avanti — Tell It Like It Is! Problems, Answers Problems of all sorts are posed to the Superintendent; but one man alone can not solve these problems and please everyone at the same time. This is where our schoolboard comes in. It is easy to say that the freshmen have probably the most difficult role to play in high school — that of the youngest and the newest. This year ' s frosh have been extremely ac- tive in school affairs. For many, this year has proved valuable in many things besides academics. LIVING SENIORS SHINE IN ' 72 On September 9, 1971, the class of 1972 took the first step on the path to their future. Days later Don Frifeldt and Cindy Chapman were elected King and Queen of our 1971 homecoming. As they approached November it came time to start, what would be a major project for the school year. Under the Gaslight was chosen, re- hearsed, and then presented on November 19 and 20. Next on the path the seniors turned their efforts toward winning the Spirit Jug. This wasn ' t just any ol ' Spirit Jug, but the same jug that the class had won for the past two years. The Class of 72 is the first graduating class to learn through a full year of the modular scheduling system. With only a few more steps to travel before the seniors arrive at their gateway to the future we see them at a class meeting on planning the best and most meaning- ful way to open that gate — graduating from Spring Lake High School in 1972!
