The Panthers kicked off to the Mighty Mites and held them on downs and forced them to punt. It turned out that neither team could get anywhere against the other's defenseg it turned out to be a defensive battle and it was immediately determined that the team that received the right breaks would eventually come out on top. In the second quarter Masonic Home drove deep into Spring Hill ter- ritory but were held on downs and forced to give the ball to Spring Hill. The Panthers couldn't make anything so they were forced to punt: the punt was partially blocked and fell short. This was the break that made the difference and it was enough. Masonic Home took over and quickly converted the break to a touchdown, the extra point was no good but it really did not matter, for the damage had already been done. The two teams battled on even terms the rest of the game, neither team could seem to get rolling. The defense seemed to dominate the offense the rest of the way, although Bowlin of Masonic Home broke loose and scampered to the S. H. 5 before being overtaken by Jackie Tucker. S. H. then held the Mites and took over on a fourth down fumble which was covered by Eugene Baucom. Although Spring Hill lost to a great team, they showed that they weren't playing out of their class by holding the Mighty Mites down even though injuries had severely hurt the team. The final score: Masonic Home 6, S. H. O. SPRING HILL DOWNS BECKVILLE In a game that the Panthers won by not too large a margin, S. H. showed what they had in a matter of offense by trouncing highly-regarded Beckville of a neighboring dis- trict. The game was not really as close as the score might indicate. The lightening- fast Panthers struck early and coasted to a convincing win. With Wilkinson and Cline hitting for key yardage, thePanthersgot off to a quick start. Wilkinson opened the swing on a 60-yard jaunt, then added another a minute later on a line smash: later in the second quarter he passed to Cline for 60 yards and a T. D. John Wulliamson booted a F. G. from the 24 yard line. During the last half Beckville got 2 T. D. 's in each of the last two quarters while Cline was getting four more for S. H. on runs of 20, 60, 56, and 80 yards respectively. At the close of the final quarter, the score read S. H. 42, Beckville 28. l BIG SANDY TAKES PANTHERS On the night of September 25, the Big Sandy Wildcats downed the Panthers by score of 14-6, although out-gained in every department. Spring Hill fumbled away its chances for victory as Big Sandy converted two of them into touchdowns. Early in the first quarter, after taking over a Panther fumble on the 24, the 'Cats passed into the end zonefor first T. D. The S. H. backs coLrldn't seem to get moving until S. H. shifted to the single- wing and big Vernon Wilkinson started making good yardage on line plunges from the deep slot. The Panters nfhoroughly outplayed the Wildcats the last half, but seemed to lack the punch to get the ball across inside the 20-yard line. The game ended with the Pantherslin possession of the ball on the Wildcat's one-yard line. Throughout the game the Panthers displayed an almost incomparable defense limit- ing the Wildcats to 84 yds. rushing, but the S. H. offense seemed to back down just when the Panters needed,it most. S. H. BREEZES PAST HARMONY The Panthers seemed' to have little trouble in downing Harmony to the tune of 10-0. The Panthers grabbed a 19-0 lead in the first half and were content to maintain it dur- ing the last half. Sullivan scored first for S. H. on a 24-yard scamper for the first T. D. Then in the second quarter the Panthers scored twice: Sullivan set up the first with a 27-yard sprint to the 14. From there Waylon Brown intercepted a Harmony pass and then Hardy Cline sprinted 29 yards for the final rallyg John booted the extra point. Throughout the game the Panthers were far superior in every department, but were content to hold the scoref down. Although Harmony was outclassed, they never lost their spirit or gave up. The Eagles finished the game as they had started it, full of spirit. The Panthers took their measures with comparative ease and liberal substitutions. UNION GROVE BEATS SPRING HILL The Union Grove Lions won their first conference game of the season at the hands of the crippled and spirit-less Panthers. Playing without the aid of Coach Meredith and several injured players, including Cline and Tucker. The Panthers could never seem to get rolling, but it was really the fumbles that led to the dovmfall of the Panthers, 17 to be exact, with only 5 being recovered. The first U. G. touchdown came early in the second quarter on a pass to Mocky, the tall end, who sprinted into the end zone. Late in the third quarter the Lions blocked a quick kick on the Panther 30, and scooped it up for another T. D. Later in the fourth quarter Union Grove scored again to bring the score to 18-O, The Panthers showed a strong defense lead by tackles, Bert Lindsey, Jim Baber, Roy McGrede and Vernon Wil- kinson. SPRING HILL CRUSHES NEW DIANA The Panthers, displaying an irresistible offense and impregnable defense, trouced the New Diana Eagles by a score of 67-6. Cline opened the scoring by running 39 and 38 yards. Then Sullivan scored on a 13 yard plunge and then sprinted '73 yards to close out the scoring in the first quarter. Brown opened the second quarter by returning an intercepted pass 30 yards. Then Cline closed the half by scoring from the nine. The Eagles scored their only time with reserves dotting the S. H. line-up. Arnold went 48 yards through right tackle to score. Cline added two more T. D. 's of 21 and 19 yards during the third quarter and then .topped off a brilliant night by dashing 31 yards for the final Panther score. Williamson converted on all but two of the Panther T. D. 's. McGrede and Lindsey were outstanding on defense while Cline and Brown and Sullivan showed up on offense. The final score: S. H. 67, N. D. 6. SABINE SURGES OVER PANTHERS In the closing stage of their grid campaign, the Panthers met the Champs of their district and played the Cardinals a much better game than the score would indicate. The Panthers threw up a strong defense against ground plays spearheaded by big Jim Baber and the powerful ground attacks of the Cardinals seemed to falter: then they took to the air and on their very first pass play connected for a T. D. over the S. H. safety man. Then the Cardinals realized that since they could not penetrate the Panther de- fense, they would just throw over it. That set the pattern for the night's play. All but one of Sabine 's T. D. 's came on passes and that was set up by a pass. The Cardinals slipped in a T. D. ten seconds before the half ended and another ten seconds before the final gun. For the first time of the season the Panthers met a team that was as good, especially on that particular night, as they were, but later they were to prove that even the Champion Cardinals were not really better than they were, when they got all their steam working in the same direction. When the gun sounded the Panthers had come out on the short end of the 37-0 score, the worst that they had been outscored in quite a few years. PANTHERS CLAW ARP TIGERS The Panthers, on thephard running of Fullback Vernon Wilkinson, downed the Tigers from Arp without too much trouble. The first S. H. touchdown came early in the first quarter after a sustained march from the Arp 48. Wilkinson plunged over for the T. D. 5 John Williamson converted. Arp came right and scored on a drive of 93 yards with mixed pass and running plays. Arnold carried across forthe Tigersg the conversion try was blocked by Sullivan. The Panthers scored twice idn the third quarter, the first score coming after Wilkin- son returned the kick-offlfrom his 30 to the Arp 39. With Cline and Wilkinson alternat- ing to set up the score: Wilkinson plunged over from the one. Spring Hill's final score came on a pass interception by Waylon Brown, who sprinted across from the 10. Baber, Lindsey and Yarbrough stpod out in defense by S. H. while Wilkinson Brown, and Cline showed up on offense. The final score was Spring Hill 20, Arp 6. SPRING HILL TROUNCES IUDSON In the last game of the season for both teams Spring Hill met the potent Blue Devils from Judson. The Devilsg turned out to be a soft touch for the unstoppable offense of the Panthers. Before game time, Judson, who had held the Champion Sabine to a 6-0 win, was favored by from two to four T. D. 's but just after the game opened it was immediately evident that Judson couldj not match the relentless Panther ground game. On the sixth play of the game Hardy Cline broke through the left side of the line for 45 yards and a Spring iHill T. D. Then earlv in the second quarter Vernon Wilkinson bulled his way over from fthe 17 to make it 12-0, Then later in the quarter Gary of Judson scored a T. D. , then kicked the extra point to make it 12-7 at the half. The Panthers started slow during the second half, but turned on the steam the last quarter to score 19 quick points. Cline carried over from the 30, then again from the 3, and then Sullivan dashed over from the 18. John Williamson kicked the extra point. The Panthers seemed satisfied with their lead and let Judson score once more for good measure in the last quarter. However, the end of the game found the Panthers on the Devils' 20 yard line after a sustained march from deep in their own territory. The game was marked by flawless ball-handling of Waylon Brown and each of the backs seemed to gain from 10 to 25 yards each time behind the superb blocking of the line. The final score: S.
