Spring Hill Rural High School Spring Hill, Kansas Dedication TO THE STUDENTS OF SPRING HILL RURAL HIGH SCHOOL Many long and late hours have been spent to make this the best year- book the Bronco has ever published. We hope you approve. Numerous events have been omitted either purposely or unintention- ally. Perhaps the photos and copy we Q have will help you remember the place where your teachers and parents struggled to educate you to be good citizens. May you be responsible, thinking citizens during your high school years so that you will be able to cope with the enormous problems which you will have to solve in life. J. l-IAN, Principal Kansas State College of Pittsburgh If you were privileged to spend one hour in his office you would see the important role Mr. Han plays in school life. For our school without Mr. Han would be as a man without a backbone. Men behind the scenes here at school are the Board of Education. They are as follows: Robert Stone, Direc- torg Robert Creamer, Clerkg and Ed McNeal, Treasurer. A Indispensable is the adjective to de- scribe Mrs. Glenn Peer, School Sec- retary. Her duties range from fill- ing out simple passes to writing pay checks. Being seniors, we are becoming more aware of teachers and classmates, but no matter how long we travel the road of life, one person will stand out - the to whom we took our problems and and found a listening ear for both. one joys . .va Y c 9 X 1 RY-VOR U W ' L ' . Anyone for shorthand, typing, bookkeeping, or secretarial practice? These girls are. They are preparing themselves for future positions as clerks, stenographers, or secretaries. The girls enjoy their courses, but who wou1dn't with MRS. WHITE!-IEAD as their instructor. Whitehead - Robertson Students enjoy themselves along with learn- ing grammar, literature, and history in classes taught by one of our new teachers, MR. ROBERTSON. Literature students dis- covered the enjoyment found in reading bet- ter books for their reports. To keep Amer- ican history fresh and up-to-date, students scanned daily newspapers for pertinent news items. W1 .Alarm , f- it S1-A P. E. girls have as much fun in German football as they did bicycle riding. Health students learn about first aid by experiment- ing on MISS WOOLARD. Making out income tax forms was one phase of economics which will be useful. Psychology was taught second semester. Miss Woolard also teaches world history class which made a trip to Old Castle Museum and the Quayle Bibles in Baldwin. Woolard - Green Flower collections, the spring project for biology classes, are being prepared by two students. Some collections contained as many as sixty specimens. General science covers the chemical action of fire extin- guishers to the principle of the barometer and the reading of weather maps. An excel- lent way of expressing oneself is with color and line through painting and sketching. These artists absorb fresh air and sunshine while they receive an art grade from MRS. GREEN . ,f M' 4f?'G,?2.I, ' at sg! MQ .4 ai . N Juniors and seniors, who have English with MR. HARMON know they will get a good workout with parts of speech, verbals, and diagraming, and will do plenty of writing before the year is done. Speech and Spanish classes also appreciate the fact that they earn their grades, but because each one knows this is beneficial to him he simply buckles down and works. Harmon - Peer Do you remember how to deagram sentences? These English students could probably refresh your memories because of extensive work in this area. Supplementary reading was also introduced through the Reader 's Digest pro- gram. MR. PEER lectures to American gov- ernment and Isms classes to keep young people interested in current problems. WIT, R. , ,, With two sections of Algebra I, Algebra II, geometry, physics, general mathematics, and a special class in advanced math, MR. GREEN was kept quite busy. From the il- lustrations we see various problems which were encountered - line graphs, theorems, slide rules, frations and . . . flying machines Green - Petrie So many students demanded driver education that this year four sections were added to the curriculum. Here the class attempts to change a tire. American history and boys' health and physical education are also taught by MR. PETRIE. Future homemakers get a well-rounded back- ground by taking all four courses in home- making from MRS. AVERY. Fine points of table setting are practiced by the first year girls and meat cutting is demonstrated by Mr. Kuhn to sophomores. Junior girls re- ceive advanced instruction which includes home nursing. Senior girls begin to think of the years after school, so they plan and furnish their dream homes, choose wedding dresses, and observe and entertain pre- schoolers. Avery - Hallmark Because of three new teachers right out of college with fresh ideas on use of the library, MRS. HALLMARK has been especially busy helping students find information and assist- ing in the choice of reading materials. Reports come easier in the library. HI iff r Many lovely pieces of furniture are turned out, literally, on the lathe by Shop II mem- bers, Other more practical items, as trailor beds, are constructed for farm use by Shop I. Beginners must have a plan in order to ac- complish anything so drafting for freshmen is essential. This year MR. JONES added the melting pot to the equipment for metals class in order to prepare metal for casting. Here Jim demonstrates the arc welder. Jones - Green, Member of the music appreciation class gather around the hi-fi to do some appreci- ating. MR. GREEN includes music from the classic composers to modern jazz for a well- balanced program . Choose the good ones. They Know the Universal Language - l H ti?-Zjgiu ' 45? CONCERT BAND members, musical people who develop and give their talents to their school, look proud in their concert uniforms. Looking just as proud is Mr. Music Man Green because of the I' rating the group received at the District Music Contest. MARCHING BAND has a busy season including half-time exercises at home football games, parades at Olathe and Gardner, Pittsburg Band Day, and K. U. Band Day. Wherever they went, they repre- sented our school in the best way possible - with good conduct and great performances. MAJORETTES, under the direction of Drum Major Carol Rogers, preceded the band in all marching activities. The majorettes are Reta Cave, Karen Furrell, Vicki Thetford, Pam Douglas, Judy Morrison, and Pat Brothers. Music 1 and Plenty of It! Sing, Sing, Sing and that's just what the Mixed Chorus did this year. In fact, they sang their way to a I rating at the District Music Contest. The Femme Fatale of the Music Department - the Girls' Glee Club. By the way, that cute one in the glasses, standing at right, is Mr. Green - The Greatest! Not only the girls are active in music, but also the Boys' Glee Club enjoys singing a tune now and again. They especially like the treble cleff curves - maybe even better than the girls do! 1' ZH Q. mall Music Groups Carry n BOYS' QUARTET enjoyed a year of performing toget- her at various events in our area, with barber shop har- mony being their specialty. As game results would indicate, our Bronco team started the season rough and tough, ready to take the League trophy for the year. Old Dame Fortune, however, had other ideas. Injuries and illness plagued the team after powerhouse O'Malley broke his thumb during the Stanley game and was out for the rest of the season.
