1 . , P A: THE clot-tsalutt OF toaa i , 4 ff g ag? 523 iiillwx a ff' up Q K X vt X Tim XXXXXXX, Hr Ilflf 4 f.f,fJ5,'. '.': -'-'f'-' iff- 1' ig ' hf HW Faculty mere inculcation of knowledge. Though the Liberal Arts are essential components of the culture of man, these in themselves are not enough. Error must be condemned, truth must be upheld. The ability to discover wrong and right must be made possible by the dissemination of rules and precepts that in themselves form the foundation of truth and lead unequivocally to all that is correct and true. But though the philosophy be true it must have an activating co-agent to bring it to its fullest and deepest signilicance. Religion alone is capable of securing this end. Thus every by-way of learning and erudition in the .lesuit System of education is lighted by the twin lamps of a tried and true philosophy and theology. It is the most eflicacious system ever devised. The educational institutions of the Society of Jesus dot the face of the globe. The men them- selves, whether in trackless jungles, noisy city streets, barren wastes or cloistered halls, do the work of God. Only the best may join the company of Loyola and these men, the shock troops of Chris- tianity, form today the bulwark of the Catholic Church-their schools, the fortresses of pure un- adulterated philosophy and moral idealism that repulse the tidal waves of sophistry and cant. Bringing man into the full diapason of his being, disseminating truth in all its forms, caring Il0t for themselves but for others they, ithe Jesuits, are the recognized exemplars of Christian idealism, the harbingers of sound thought. They will trek to the end of time, their strength intact, the pure metal of their aspirations undimmed. OO 0 F t s' 'Qs tweypyps ,ne-QM... Rev. EDWARD T. CASSIDY, SJ. Dean .Q Khhlilltljnnlasuxis ' ' I Faculty Many years ago, under the great dome of St. Peters in Rome, there occurred a scene that for sheer dramatic intensity and pregnant import has never been equalled in the annals of history. The place was the private audience chamber of His Holiness, Pope Pius Ill, Kneeling before him were seven men, their countenances lined and shining with the enduring purpose with which their very souls were fired. Imbued with the awful spirit of their leader, lgnatins Loyola, they had travelled afoot across linrope for this moment, to receive the approbation of the Holy Father for their sanguine hopes. He looked at them and said, The finger of God rests here. The centuries have borne out his prophecy. Armed with something besides themselves, this group of men has marched down the arches of time, though harrassed and persecuted, condemned and vilified, their numbers increasing, their influence diffusing in ever-widening circles and their strength growing till today the Society of Jesus is spread to the far corners of the earth, Though organized for the sole purpose of imita- tion of the life of Christ, the forte of the Jesuits lies in the field of education. The goal of the Jesuit Sy stem of education is the harmonious development of all man's faculties. It cannot he achieved by the Rev. THOMAS Snnsuis, S.J.
