The place was the private audience chamber of His Holiness, Pope Pius Ill, Kneeling before him were seven men, their countenances lined and shining with the enduring purpose with which their very souls were fired. Imbued with the awful spirit of their leader, lgnatins Loyola, they had travelled afoot across linrope for this moment, to receive the approbation of the Holy Father for their sanguine hopes. He looked at them and said, The finger of God rests here. The centuries have borne out his prophecy. Armed with something besides themselves, this group of men has marched down the arches of time, though harrassed and persecuted, condemned and vilified, their numbers increasing, their influence diffusing in ever-widening circles and their strength growing till today the Society of Jesus is spread to the far corners of the earth, Though organized for the sole purpose of imita- tion of the life of Christ, the forte of the Jesuits lies in the field of education.
