Education, as understood by the Je- suits, is the full development of all the faculties that are characteristic of man, the physical, intellectual, moral. It is not the purpose of the Jesuit system to over burden the student, rather it strives to obtain for him a well-balanced course, from which the scholar can obtain that which is best suited to his faculties, and to the unforeseen difficulties which may arise in life. Another thing which added materially to the value of education was the introduction of mod- ern languages into the regular curricu- lum. Before this change was made, all branches of mathematics, physics, etc., were studied in the original Latin. In the various Colleges in Europe there was a course arranged in such a manner as to have no high school course at all. The College comprised the sec- ondary work and three years of Rhetoric, making a total of live years requisite for entrance into Universities.
