It is the first heartbeat of birth and the last heartbeat before death. Jt is a person sharing the joys and sorrows of others as well as himself. | Cime is learning. It is a baby taking its first breath, giving a small cry while awakening into a new world. It is a mother smiling and saying a small prayer thanking God for this small. yet so very important miracle. Cime is love. Jt is two people believing in cach other uniting as one person: sharing the hopes and difficulties of their present generation. Cime is understanding. It is letting our minds wander, while trying to grasp what we seek to understand. It is the realization that all human beings are unique individuals with different bodies as well as different minds. We are all seeking to reach our goal in life; the end of the rainbow where our pot of gold tes. Each of us sharing a separate personality. What can be said about a man who has devoted his life to the development of young, seeking minds that would express the esteem and the gratitude that he so duly deserves? This is a difficult task when the man is Lewis Eugene Smith, Mr. Smith's rewards come from knowing that he has played a part in the development process as a blossoming youth develops into an upright, contributing citizen. The difficult task is that being an upright, contributing citizen is a twenty-five hour a day job. For many years Mr. Smith has worked abreast with students and faculty members of Spring High School, and his love for people is reflected on his face by the warm, welcoming smile which one will always receive from him as he greets them. Since Mr, Smith first came to Spring in 1938, as a business teacher from Sam Houston State Teacher's College where he obtained both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education Degrees, he has devoted many lorg dedicated hours to the | school and the community of Spring. He was the first organizing sponsor of the | Spring Chapter of the National Honor Society and in his early years at Spring, he was the boys' baseball coach. In 1940, besides the marriage to his beloved wife Moselle Sibley, who he met here at Spring, Mr. Smith was promoted to the position of principal where he‘per- formed his duties with unquestioning loyalty as he did when he was promoted to assistant superintendent in 1968. After all these years of dedicated services to Spring, he is now retiring. It is with deep gratitude and high esteem from Spring Senior High School that we respectfully dedicate the Roar of 1971 to Lewis Eugene Smith. Dream not small dreams, for these have not the power to stir the souls of men.
