CN , f ,M land foremost task on our hands was to choose a dedicatee for the 562 yearbook. We recognized the tremendous change which would overtake all phases of extra- curricular activity next year and the big job ahead for the administration and faculty as Memorial High School opens. Bearing these thoughts in our minds, we selected one man whose contributions to the Spring Branch Independent School District has been as great as his con- tributions to individual students, minds, bodies, and moral character, Head Coach and Athletic Director, Darrell Tully. Coach Tully, originally from Henrietta, Texas, attended East Texas State Teachers College in Commerce, Texas, where he later became the assistant football coach. In 1939, he continued in this field of sports as a professional football player for the Detroit Lions. He left this position during World War II to serve in the Navy and then returned to football coaching after the war at Crozier Tech High in Dallas, Texas. From Dallas, Coach Tully moved to Ball High School in Galveston as head coach. In 1957 he accepted the position as head coach at Spring Branch High School. Coach Tully has held other positions over the state which have brought him high honors as a top man in his field. In 1959-60, he served as President of the Texas High School Coaches Association and at the same time he was head coach of the South-All-Star Football Team. TWIRP DANCE Weeks before the event, the fairer sex stopped buying that extra coke and started pinching pennies. Now she would have a dose of her own medicine. She picked up her date and went out to eat, where she paid the check. She opened the door gallantly and sat him down like a pure gentleman. And when they got to the dance, she paid for the tickets and asked him to Ntrip the light fantasticf' The cafeteria was adorned in African style and the dance hosted two bands for continual music. lt was her night and when she took him home and said goodnight, she thought to herself, 4'Am I glad this only happens once a year! Starting long before the kickoff, this event will remain in the minds of the students for many years to come. The Homecoming dance, game and Queen: the whole event starts with the building of the Bonfire. Spirits climb as the embers of the Bonfire slowly Clie. The candidates for Queen prepare for that long wait until the name of the winner is announced. This halftime show is the most eventful of the year. Von Sanclifer grabs for support as her name is announced and 1960 Queen Pat Xvhite looks on with wet eyes remembering what that moment felt like. The night7s and the Bears' victory is celebrated with a dance where Queen Von and her escort, Doug Jones, reign in regal fashion. 1961 Homecoming Queen candidates with their escorts. The Thornton Wilcler play, directed by Mrs. Carolyn Grillo, employed many dramatic veterans of Spring Branch High School in its presentation. Mood, an important aspect of the play, so suc- cessfully created by the drama department in HOur Townfgwas perhaps the most notable achievement of a monthls hard work. OUR TOW K The S. S. If there is any weakness in the Spring Branch football team, the Bellaire Cardinals couldn't find it. Rated as a mild six-point favorite at kickoff, coach Darrell Tully's lightning-fast Bears paid little atten- tion to a touted Cardinal eleven and a Friday-the-13th jinx to completely humiliate the Cards, 34-0. Sebastion ran an 80-yard touchdown scamper, and then Ike Lucas faked a kick and handed off to Nabors who sped 56 yards down the sideline to score. Wimmer ran for the extra point. A 69-yard drive, capped by Bill Hunteris seven-yard burst over right tackle, gave the Bears their third touchdown and a five-yard run by Wimmer capping a 65-yard drive made it 28-0 with 15 seconds left in the third quarter. The third unit put the final score across as quarterback Tommy Wilson passed 26-yards to Bill Miller with 3:35 left to play. Bears show good offensive, play.
