In the 1958 Bruin, we have tried to do much more. We have attempted to give a well-rounded picture of school life at SBHS by not only recording the major high- lights, but devoting a portion of our coverage to many little things which will help each of us recall the varied experiences that set '58 apart. Our story could not have become a reality without the hard work of many students and the cooperation of almost every faculty member. While it is impossible to mention everyone who had a hand in the production of your Bruin, we feel it only fitting to give credit to those who did so much. To Taylor Publishing Company, our printers, goes our undying gratitude for doing a terrific job of transforming rough copy into this finished product. Taylor's representa- tives, Martin Hamilton and Don Weitinger, were never too busy to offer advice or roll up their shirt sleeves to lend a helping hand. Photography credit is wide-spread in this year's an- nual. Our sincere thanks to Provine Studios for shooting and processing in record time some 1200 class pictures . . . to Graham Studio for the portrait work appearing in the Beauty and Brawn division . . . and last, but far from least, to our local unsung heroes of the camera, E. Bryan and Larry Fowler. This is the largest Bruin ever produced and we take a great deal of pride in presenting it to you. As you leaf through its pages, may you relive many enjoyable moments, and perhaps even say '58 was great! If you do, then we have accomplished the pleasant task of publishing the Bruin. JW TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION FACULTY LASSES ETIC A T 'S WHO EAUTY AND BRA GAN ZATIONS W wijjjgywiw If My MQW 1 r I f I I ,, if If one word would serve to characterize Spring Branch's Senior Counselor and first Dean of Girls, Annice Eccles, it would undoubtedly be devotion.', Literally, the word means ardent affection, zealous attachment- both qualities deeply felt by Mrs. Eccles for her chosen profession. Even her beloved husband Oscar states, first, above all else, comes Annice's wholehearted devotion to her work. When one feels so strongly about a chosen field, often there evolves a lack of concern for the little extras that create a warm and friendly personality - not so with Annice Eccles. Though she adheres to a strict code of ethics which motivates her to con- stantly strive for the highest standards of education for student and school, it takes but a second for a pair of dancing, dark brown eyes to reveal her delightful inner personality. Mrs. Eccles' reputation for fair play and personal regard for the individual students welfare has won her the respect and admiration of Spring Branch Highs students and fellow faculty members. To Annie Eccles -- a dedicated woman - we respectfully dedicate the '58 BRUIN. Q-Y vw, e ' . THE SCHOOL BOARD The Spring Branch School Board. an alert, civic-minded group of men whose prime interest is the welfare of the boys and girls of the community, led the citizens of the district in approving a 554,992,190 bond issue in October of 1957. This allotment is ex- pected to care for an enrollment up to 15,000 students, The Board is also participating in the Hale-Aiken Study program, a state-wide grass-roots survey aimed at improving the curriculum and the services of the public schools of Texas. Only seven years out of Class B football and competing in the most reputable 4-A district in South Texas, Spring Branch to- day stands beside Baytown and Pasadena, when equal footing with these giants seemed next to the impossible only a few months ago. Tl-IE BEST illustration of the Bears' progress is a home-and- home series with.Corpus Christi Ray, last year's state finalist and ranked second to Amarillo for 10 consecutive weeks this year. Tully's boys go to Cor- pus Christi in 1958, and play the candy-striped assassins in Spring Branch in 1959. Spring Branch is expected to improve its 6-4 record in 1958, for the Bears lose only two starters off their defensive team and six off the offensive unit,, including Quarterback Jim! Kreutz, the man who made aa precision spread-T, copied aft-l er Stanford's, go. I With the talented Tully and his staff experimenting in a new system, plus the fact that the Bears had won only one of 10 games in 1956, their first year in 4-A ball, Spring Branch was expected to be another doormat in District 12-AAAAg BUT TULLY, WHO lifted Gal- veston off the floor in three seasons and finished only two votes behind Coach of the Year Bull Kotrola in 1954, instilled a VAUGHN CRAIN new spirit in the sagging bu'! ambitious Bears. Spring Branch, whose line averaged 161 pounds and the backfield 157, clobbered its first four opponents-Smiley, Kirwin, Bellaire and Saint Thomas, be- fore falling to Conroe by four points. In the end, Spring Branch was.the only team that scored as many as three touchdowns against Galena Park. The Bears lost to Pasadena, Baytown and the district champion Yellow Jackets by one-touchdown gaps. Gary West, Lyn Hinojosa, Her- man Cooper and Herbie Smith placed in the top 10 scorers. THE PACT WITH Ray is only one promising aspect in Spring Branch's future. Plans call for a stadium seating 10,000 by 1959, and a new field house is under construction now. Tully, who reaches his 40th birthday next month, would like to finish out his career at Spring Branch, which comes pretty near the goal he set for himself when he was Little All- America at East Texas State. Tully askedvfor a challenge, conquered same. i I Spring Branch Bears Win Games, Prom Q BY MORRIS FRANK Oh, they have always been effective on the dance floor. Real cool, or however the a rhumba. I don't know one modems cheer a twostep or dance step from another. Myl war department just leads me through whatever the band plays. Bu-t I have always got a big kick out of how the stalwart gladiators from good old Spring Branch High School glide with their lovely dates at the annual banquets. Yes, for a long time the Spring Branch Bears have won the proms. This yearxthoslgh the Bears really growled on the grid- iron. Spring Branch filled the scoreboard as neatly as they usually do the dance Dro- grams. The Bears, in a 10- game schedule, copped six of them and in the other four their opponents, all stout ones, too, greeted the final whistle as happily as if it were the din- ner bell.
