Look well, therefore, to this Day. Such is the salutation of the dawn. 21 For the past 21 years Spring Arbor College has experienced Dr. Harold W. Darling as Dean of Students, Registrar, Academic Dean, and presently Chairman of the Social Science Division and Professor of Psychology. But most of us will remember him best as the warm, sensitive man that he is. His caring spirit, deep committment to God, and family devotion have led him to an intense involvement with students, his church, his community, and the needy of Bangladesh through the Society of Christian Action. His professional competency as a teacher and counselor coupled with his empathetic understanding have earned him the deep respect and admiration of students and colleagues alike. It is with deep affection and pride that we dedicate the 1974 Echo to Dr. Harold W. Flowers o r Flowers for Algernon was this year's drama presentation selection for the interim Dramatics class. The play was presented as part of the requirements for the class, as well as using other interested people from the college. Flowers for Algernon is an episodical play with flashbacks of Charlie Gordon's early life. The life of Charlie is viewed as he moves from the state of a moron to the intellectual capacity of a genius. The tampering of the mind by science creates new problems for Charlie that neither he nor the scientist can handle. The play raises the serious question of whether anyone should play God. Previous summer tour took these five musicians to Brazil and Paraguay in South America as part of a VISA team, and throughout the States as well. Chosen on the basis of leadership, friendliness, and school involvement, they worked at community banquets and breakfasts, aided at school and Presidential receptions, and helped with freshman recruiting. They welcomed campus guests as another facet of their volunteer services to the school. Coordinator, Joe-lyn Hurd, explained that the group acquired new, coordinating outfits to be worn when they served. 121 Karate Club Works to Obtain Perfection Karate is a martial art which was perfected in Japan after many centuries of evolution in the Orient. Based upon both mental and bodily disciplines, it is considered to be one of the fines forms of exercise. The Karate club meets three times a week and is in instructed by Seiji Matsomato. Seiji, a Junior, received his brown belt in Japan and his black belt in California. Encouraged by the summer school program held in the Teton Mountains of Wyoming, the Mountaineering Club was formed in the fall of 1972. The shortage of mountains in the vicinity has not inhibited the Mountaineering Club from having a good time. They have participated in backpacking week-ends, canoe trips, and scaling the ledges in Grand Ledge, Michigan, with the equipment purchased by the club. The Mountaineering Club members love nature and don't mind roughing it a bit. The Ski Club was assembled in the fall of 1973 by Dr. Winslow and a number of ski enthusiasts. Until December they were forced to sit tight and wait for their prime element — snow. Led by senior Frank Dusett and Frosh Tony Luttrell, the SAC team won the Spring Arbor Inv., tied for second at Grand Valley, and placed fifth out of 17 at a tough Marion College Invitational. The biggest thrill of the season came when SA took a 27-29 homecoming victory over defending state champions, Aquinas. Jerry Lawrence, SAC's number 1 player, went undefeated in singles to pace the team. Number two singles player Jim Olson was followed by Gordon Milnes, Les Packard, Ron Kopicko and Steve Williamson to round out the team. Coach Carey is optimistic that the 74 season will be the best in Spring Arbor history. 146 Tennis 147 Golf Most of the S. A. C. Competition is tournament competition against the finest teams in the state and out of state. The overall percentage in the won lost column was 65%-35%. While the Golf team did not place 1st in any of the tournament competition, its number 1 man and captain Mike Helmer was tournament medalist several times and was a member of the NAIA all season team. The highest achievement for the team in 1973 was a second-place finish in the NAIN state tournament. Womens Volleyball Explode” proved to be a fine expression for the S.A.C. Women's Volleyball team as they exploded into the volleyball and a victorious season, posting for the Varsity a 9-1 record and 6-4 mark for the Junior varsity. Four-year veteran Jan Gingrich, aided by veterans Carmen Learned and Cindy Whited, contributed the foundation for the young, but hard-working and talented team. Their opponents averaged only 6.8 points per game and they had a very respectable showing at State Tournaments. Coach Kay Dunckel declares that next year will be even better! 150 Womens Basketball This year the Women's Basketball team has been supported by the fine assistant coaching of former player, Kathy Gabriel and coach Mrs. Kay Dunckel. Although the team lacks height, they compensate with their speed. The speed and skill present becomes the deciding factors in games where height could have overwhelmed the team. Carmen Learned, Chris Chaney, and Bev Rausa have led in scoring and rebounding; leading the way to one victory over Jackson Community College, (65-27), where they all recorded in double figure. Our strong bench is aided by our experienced Seniors Jan Gingrich and Dona Had-zor. With such a strong group of 'new-comers' and talented, experienced 'old-timers' the team anticipates greater things in future seasons. Within the cover of this yearbook is our end product. We worked to display an entire year of accomplishments and progress in the 1974 Echo. We had a year's worth of frustration, planning, disappointment and excitement. We came to realize that in spite of preparations, plans and hopes which we began with, many changes took place — some tor the worse but most for the better. We had a year of pleasant memories and valuable experiences.
