VARSITY STANDING: Virgil Cecil, lackie [vans, Larry DeRosseit, Ray Cates, Allen White, Nate lake, Tom Brown, Jeff Trautman, Norm Kohn, Jerry Neigh, and George Mitchell. KNEEl INC: Coach Burbridge, IdCole, and Coach Hutt. Last minute instructions from Coach Burbridge. The Spring Arbor Cagers were confronted with a ”rollercoaster season this year, marked by many ups and downs and lots of excitement. The Cougars started off winning a tough tournament at Olivet College, but then became plagued with some close losses and injuries. One high point in the season came during the Christmas Tournament when the Cougars defeated a favored Urbana team in overtime, a feat which placed them in the finals of the Tourney. There were also somd individual highs” during the season, junior transfer student jackie Evans set an individual school scoring record against Detroit Tech, by pumping in 53 points in one of his best games of the season. Four-year letterman jerry Neigh made Basketball History by becoming the number one scorer in the state of Michigan when he surpassed the old record by pumping in 38 points in an excellent performance against Ovvosso College. Both Neigh and Evans contributed significantly to Cougar attack this year with a 20 plus point average per game. Other consistent performers for the cougars included top rebounding senior forward Jeff Trautman, hustling sophomore center Nate Lake, sharp-shooting sophomore guard Virgil Cecil, junior forward Norman Redneck Kohn, and driving senior guard George Mitchell. Two Junior College transfer students, Ray Gates and Larry DeRossett, added to the effectiveness of the Cougar punch by giving outstanding performances when called upon. Sophomore sub Tom Brown also demonstrated his basketball prowess in several fine performances throughout the season. All in all, it was a very interesting and exciting season, and many thanks go to Coach Burbridge, the Cougar Cagers, and the Cougar fans for making the season just that. 64
