Dr. Voller has displayed a personal interest in the students not only be serving as the college president but by his active participation in campus events. Many remember times spent in his home, parties in his barn and his enthusiastic attendance at athletic events. He is a man who genuinely cares and gladly takes time out of a busy schedule to talk formally and informally with the students. The pictures on these pages show just a few of the ways we have seen him in his years at Spring Arbor. Because of his commitment to Christian education and more specifically to Spring Arbor College we respectfully dedicate the 1972 Echo to our President, Dr. Ellwood Voller. 16 17 Our lives are diverse. We live in many phases. In this section the attempt has been made to portray life at Spring Arbor College socially, academically and spiritually, each of which portray the nature of man. In these three phases each one of us reacts in his own way, for we are individuals, living private lives. Yet, at the same time, each is an integral part of the greater community. We come together to seek new relationships and strengthen old ones. Man is by nature a social being. We cannot live without other people. Man is ever searching for knowledge, for new information. This is the basic reason for our existence as a college. We come to quench the thirst for knowledge. Finally, man is a spiritual being. We all must come to some terms with our Creator. Individually we seek peace within us. Some have found it but others are still searching. It seems that one of the ultimate ways in which we can show our Christian committment is by doing what vve can to help our fellow men. We can he proud of the degree of participation in this record-breaking project. 34 BIBLE STUDY VESPERS We are one in the Spirit And they'll know we are Christians by our Love 35 Spring Arbor College and community were honored to have astronaut Al Worden from the Apollo 15 moon flight as guest speaker. He shared with students his experiences and presented to the college a plaque autographed by he and the other astronauts commemorating the lunar expedition. The English Department was proud to present Robert Hayden, one of the leading Black poets of our time. He captivated the student body by his unique oral presentation of past experiences written in poetic form. The Mid-Year Seminar for 1972 dealt with the search for one's identity as an integral part (or integrating and constructing one's personality, thus arriving at a more meaningful synthesis of the issues, using a Christian world view as a basis. Speakers, renown throughout the nation, presented various issues on the quest for seeking one's true identity and the responsibility of each Christian to find his place and purpose in society. Then students and faculty of Spring Arbor College as well as invited guests from other colleges and universities had the opportunity for questioning, discussion, and reflection. 38 U. There is the triumph of victory — and the pain of defeat. There is the strain of bodies pushed nearly to their limit. From sports comes not only pride in our school but for the participants themselves it becomes a source of learning discipline, patience, and sportsmanship. Jeff Trautman, Steve Morrow, Clift Duncan BASEBALL Coach Burbridge The 1971 baseball season proved to be a dis-sappointment for the Cougar players and their coach. Their 75-73 record did however, enable them to continue a tradition which started eight years ago. This tradition is that the Cougar Baseballers have never experienced a losing season. The team had one of its best starts to date, bringing back a 5-3 record from their southern trip which took them to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Lack of a strong pitching staff and too many errors caused the Cougars to play only .500 ball when they returned home for their regular season.(SSM) 42 The individual honors of the 1971 Baseball team were awarded to Steve Morrow, Terry Rohe, and Robin Eberle. Steve Morrow, starting catcher for the 1970 season, put in another fine year behind the plate and was also elected Captain of the squad. Terry Rohe played his typical aggressive style of ball, both in center field and on the base paths. He had a good year and topped it off by being voted Most Valuable Player by his teammates. Robin Eberle turned in a fine performance in his second season on the Cougar squad. Robin led the Cougars in hatting this year with a .418 batting average. He was also voted Most Improved Player. Although S.A.C. was the smallest school represented at the N.A.I.A. state meet last sprirfg, they proved to be one of the best in performance and finished third. The Cougar netters continued their winning ways this fall, inspite of the loss of three players from last years squad. This years squad, led by Captain Greg Cooper, did an outstanding job to bring S.A.C its first undefeated season this (all. SAC OPPONENT 5 Grace 6 U. of M. (Flint) 5 Marion 5 Tri-State 7 U. of M. (Flint) 5 Goshen Coach Carey 46 Mike Helmer, Dave Culp. Paul Grill. Greg Clevenger, Coach Dennis Gam The Spring Arbor College golf fortunes this year rest upon the able shoulders of returning lettermen Mike Helmer, Greg Clevenger, Dave Culp and George Mitchell. Bill Cnilds, last year's Most Valuable Player and captain, graduated on to bigger and better things. His services will be missed greatly, but the four veterans should not have any trouble filling his shoes. Helmer, Clevenger and Culp all averaged in the high 70's last season with Mitchell not far behind at an even 80. Junior Paul Grill is expected to fill in as the team's fifth member. Highlights of the 1972 season will include tournament play in the Bethel, Hope and Tri-State Invitationals and early expectations indicate that Spring Arbor's linksters should bring home some hardware. All the members of the team are looking forward to a home course change. Practicing will he done at Burr Oaks Country Club instead of Hickory Hills, with some matches being divided between Burr Oak and Arbor Hills Country Club. 48 49 SOCCER Coach Undo Dunckel The Cougar soccer team topped off another outstanding season with its fourth straight (rip to the N.A.I.A. post season tournament. Under first year Coach, Verdon Dunckel, the hooters compiled a 70-3 regular season record against the toughest schedule in S.A.C.'s five years of collegiate competition. One of the losses came at the hands of powerful Michigan State University, who, after a hard-fought even battle throughout, won 2-1. After compiling a 5-1 early season record, the Cougars lost several key performers with injuries and proceeded to drop back to back thrillers to Calvin and Goshen. The team then racked up five straight wins to close the regular season. The post-season regional tournament found S.A.C. up against jinx Goshen. The game, though dominated by Spring Arbor (25 shots to 9; 10 corner kicks to 4), was won by Goshen 2-0 ending the Cougar season. In the 14 game final statistics, the Cougars showed a most impressive margin over its opponents — 417 shots on goal to 156; 111 to 46 corner kicks; and 55 goals scored to 15. Adding this year's won-loss results to the previous four year total, S.A.C. has compiled an outstanding 55 won 19 loss record — thus continuing the proud and rich Cougar soccer tradition. Men, this is a fulfillment of a life-long dream for me. Thus began Uncle Dunk's coaching career. Adding the final statistics, Dunk led the team in desire, energy, understanding, and committment to the game of soccer. No one tried harder or hurt more from a loss than he. His concern was so much more than coach for player; it was a constant exhibition of love of fellow men. We may not have won a national championship, but we, the players, won the respect of a great man. That fact makes life just a little bit happier. 50 Capt. Bob Imhoff Capt. Rich Wilson Co-Captain Bob Imhoff led all scorers (or the second straifiht year with a total of 26 points on 18 finals and 8 assists. The Cougars bowed to strong contingents from Hope, Albion and Adrian colleges as well as losing a close one at Goshen College in Indiana. Coach Ted Comden was not at all disappointed with the team's 5-4 record in the light of the (act that the SAC squad was smaller than most of the opposing teams and most athletes were required to compete in several events. Under the direction of Mrs. Paula Dutton, the women's varsity volleyball team had a victorious year. The season ended up with a record to be very proud of, 7-1. The team had some exciting times both on the playing court and on the road to games. Beneath the guiding hand of Miss Sue Carlton, the basketball team has also experienced a great year. One of the highlights of the year was the Invitational Tournament in which Houghton, Roberts and lack-son ).C. teams were participants. Women's Collegiate sports are now starting to get the recognition they should be receiving and because of this, the teams are putting forth that extra little something to represent you as a school in a VICTORIOUS year. 62 63 VARSITY STANDING: Virgil Cecil, lackie [vans, Larry DeRosseit, Ray Cates, Allen White, Nate lake, Tom Brown, Jeff Trautman, Norm Kohn, Jerry Neigh, and George Mitchell. The Spring Arbor Cagers were confronted with a ”rollercoaster season this year, marked by many ups and downs and lots of excitement. The Cougars started off winning a tough tournament at Olivet College, but then became plagued with some close losses and injuries. One high point in the season came during the Christmas Tournament when the Cougars defeated a favored Urbana team in overtime, a feat which placed them in the finals of the Tourney. There were also somd individual highs” during the season, junior transfer student jackie Evans set an individual school scoring record against Detroit Tech, by pumping in 53 points in one of his best games of the season. Four-year letterman jerry Neigh made Basketball History by becoming the number one scorer in the state of Michigan when he surpassed the old record by pumping in 38 points in an excellent performance against Ovvosso College. Both Neigh and Evans contributed significantly to Cougar attack this year with a 20 plus point average per game. Other consistent performers for the cougars included top rebounding senior forward Jeff Trautman, hustling sophomore center Nate Lake, sharp-shooting sophomore guard Virgil Cecil, junior forward Norman Redneck Kohn, and driving senior guard George Mitchell. Two Junior College transfer students, Ray Gates and Larry DeRossett, added to the effectiveness of the Cougar punch by giving outstanding performances when called upon. Sophomore sub Tom Brown also demonstrated his basketball prowess in several fine performances throughout the season. Early in the season, ferry Neigh, senior guard from Williamston, Michigan, broke the Cougar career scoring record oi 2,050 points which was held by Rocky Kent. Then in the next to the last game of the season. Neigh also topped the alltime Michigan scoring record of 2,471 points, finishing the game with a career total of 2,475 points. In his four years at Spring Arbor, the 6’2 Neigh has had many accomplishments and set numerous records. In addition to the career scoring record, he also holds all the SAC records for assists, field goals made, field goals attempted, and the highest scoring average for a season, 30.2. His single game high was 52 points and he had threee other games over 40 points. Jerry was named to seven All-Tournament teams in his four year career, and was also honored by being selected MVP at the 1970 Olivet Nazarene tournament. In his junior year, Jerry reached two plateaus that no Cougar eager before him had ever reached. His seasonal scoring average of 30.2 ranked him 10th in the nation in the N.A.I.A. in scoring. Then his brilliant season was culminated when he was named to the Converse All-American team, the first eager from SAC to receive national recognition. JUNIOR VARSITY Coach Harry Hull The I.V. basketball team of 1971-1972 coached by Harry Hutt was the pleasant surprise to many sport fans at S.A.C. Off to a slow start, losing three of their first five games, they then won their next five games straight before losing to Tri-State. They got hack on the winning track by winning four straight with one game remaining. The Cougar Cubs had to make up a defecit in height with all around hustle and aggressiveness whiched proved to be a valuable asset in winning the close ball games. Sophomore Harold Hay led the way in rebounding as Freshmen Dan Leonard and Ted Scofield led a scoring attack. Sophomore guard Jacque Daup was the leader of the fast break that the }.V. team used as their initial offense. Coach Harry Hutt stressed team play and showed it by shuffling players in and out of the line-up during a game. Some may be in student government, some in service groups and some expressing themselves through music. While it is not necessary to be in a club or an organization to identify with a group, many have found that they can become closer to other students while performing a service for the school as a whole. In these few pages not all of the groups can be represented, but, pictured or not, we can be proud of the degree of student involvement here at Spring Arbor College.
