Basketball Squad The Sprague Vikings began the season with 2 returning lettermen, Charlie Hill and Dean Doerschlag. Before the season was over, we had established a reputation as a young team one which the other Bi-County teams had better watch for the next few years. Our season's record wasn't too impressive, winning 6 and losing 14. However, there is more to this record than meets the eye. We played 11 ball games that were deiced by 1 or 2 points. We won 5 of these games. Seven games were lost by a total of 18 points, including the Ritzville game, which the Vikings lost by 5 points. Ritzville ended the sea- son as Northeast District Champions. The Vikings took the customary 3rd place in the Reardan tournament played during Christmas vacation. The Junior Varsity had a rather poor season, winning 4 and losing 11. Many players gained much valuable experience by playing with this squad this year. The honorary captain elected by his fellow team mates was Wendell McMinimy. Sopho- more Steve Culbertson was the season's high scorer. Charlie Hill was again honored by being chosen on the All-Conference Honorable Mention team. There will be 5 returning lettermen for the Vikings next year, plus some players lost by ineligibility. We look forward to having a more experienced and a winning team next season. The event that was probably the most educating was the trip to Odessa where wc attended the Massed Band and Chorus festival, directed by Mr. Wayne Hertz, The purposes of the chorus are numerous The chorus tried to provide an education in the rudiments and appreciation of the dif- ferent types of music. We made 3 major appearances this year. The Spring Concert, presented May 15, and the special numbers presented at Baccalau- reate and Commencement. Baud Fifteen high school students and eight 6th, 7th, and 8th graders made up our band for this year. It was a rewarding experience for all of us as we provided entertainment Qin- deedlj for all the home football and basketball games. In addition to playing at athletic events, the band made two other appearances, the Spring Concert, May 15, and at Commencement. This was not only a new and challenging experience for some of our younger students, but was likewise for our director. --Written by Mr. Widmer, Band Director Tl-ns PAGE IS SPONSORED sv DR, C,G. Gary Henson and Patti Palmer took the Bi-County Mixed Doubles championship but were rlefeatecl by Marcus in the district meet. The girls doubles team, Jaei Carlson and Marilyn Palmer, won four matches anal lost two, one of these to the bi-county champions. Kon Lampartcr and Tom Fox, the boys doubles team, showed great potential but, because of lack of experience, their record didn't show their true abilities. Marlene Sumpter, Kathie Smith, and Mike Jennings, all singles players, showed much improvement during the season., Losing only the girls doubles and singles, the tennis team should do equally well next year. The 7th Sz 8th grade class had several enjoyable class parties throughout the year. One of the highlights of the year was an all day field trip through Fairchild A. F. Base. There were 23 students in the class this year, eight of which graduated from the 8th grade. The year was ended with an all day picnic at the Nat Park in Spokane. During the year, Eddie Webster was here for several months and Patti Gau became a regular student. We received certificates for selling magazines and Bluebirds. We have had an enjoyable year. There were 11 students in the 3rd grade and 11 in the 4th grade too this year. One of the highlights of the year was when everyone learned to square dance. Pioneers were studies in social studies, and a program was given for the parents. Twenty ni.ne of us took part in the outstanding activities of our room which were dino- saurs, farm and pasteurization of milk, transportation, birds, Eskimos, magnets, Super Circus, health and safety. This year was fun for everyone. This years Big K kindergarten class had seventeen members enrolled. We had the following activities to keep us busy, dancing, poems, stories, music, art, puzzles, dra- matics and creative activities. Graduation exercises were held on May 29, 1959, followed by a picnic lunch with our mothers. THIS PAGE is SPONSORED BY GARNERS FOOD CENTER G go 6053 86201111 O -1 96 gpg?
