TW Spoon River College is educational, fun, competitive. ju , ,N H fo- 'if' ,CHM 4 4 ' - SRC is privileged to host many activities throughout the year. Many of the annual events include the SRC Track invitational and Stormin' in. Spoon River was also able to host a display from NASA that included a rock from the moon. The play was a comedy about a widow and a widower in their middle sixties. The couple met, tell in love, and decided to continue their lives together. This was all so fantastic for them until it came time to break the news to their neurotic children. Fieal money was exchanged with play money for the various games: craps, blackjack, roulette, and poker. Any student could exchange his winnings for a prize. Casino Night, April 6, 1978, was concluded with a dance featur- ing Shelter Crusader's Dayg Spring Spring Crusaders Day, April 26, 1978 proved to be quite a success. The weather was perfect tor Kentucky Fried Chicken, games, and relaxing. The semi-annual event, held at Big Creek Park in Canton, has always been popular tor its contests. This year was no exception with active par- ticipation in volleyball, relay races, tennis, and tug-of-war. Many Students Enjoy Bowling Night One ot the many activities sponsored by the student senate was Bowling Night. lt was held once a month at Four Seasons Bowl with reduced rates for Spoon River students. Princess Laura Strode and Prince Don Korns. Crusader Homecoming 1979 The Student Senate and Cheerleaders worked hard to plan a week of activities for Crusader Homecoming '79. The weather did not cooperate, however. No school was held Monday and Tuesday of Homecoming Week, Jan. 15-19, because of a blizzard that struck the area. A Mr. Sexy legs contest and greaser day was planned for lvlon- day, and wild-n-crazy day was planned for Tuesday. Neither was carried out, though. Pajama day was planned for Wednesday, but no one knew for sure whether to dress for the occasion or not. Therefore no pajama clad students were found on the campus. Homecoming Hoy- alty elections were held on Wednesday with the winners to be announced at halt time during the men's game on Thursday. Q Q I 1 8. Thursday brought some spirit with red, white and blue day and hat day . The Homecoming games held on Thursday night showed a losing women's team, but a victorious men's teamg a 77-59 win over Lincolnland College. During half time the royalty was crowned by the 1978 Home- coming Fioyalty. The '79 King and Queen were Mark Schappaugh and Ann Floyer. The Prince and Princess were Don Korns and Laura Strode. The election campaigns were livelier than in past years and were close. The homecoming dance that fol- lowed the game and concluded the week of activities featured the band Kittens, a. Fellowship of Christian Athletes The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a group of young men and women, who met weekly to discuss community projects and apply religion to their everyday lives. The organization that was in its second year at SRC was nationally affiliated and boasted thirty active members. The organization was active in fund raising for community and FCA projects. Two school bake sales, a garage-bake sale, a visit to the Farming- ton nursing home, a weiner roast and hayrack ride, a gift food basket given to a needy family, and Christmas caroling to shut-ins with a party afterwards were all on the agenda for the group. The local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa serves to honor stu- dents at Spoon Fiiver College who have achieved academic success in their chosen majors in a transfer program. The organization held two initiation ceremonies. The first, a carry-in dinner, ,was held in November for the spring of '78 students at Shields Chapel Church. The second was a ban- quet held at Wee-Ma-Tuk country club in April 1979 for the fall of '78 initiates. With an abundance of freshmen and with Janette Mangus leading the women, Spoon River finished with a fine record of 38-36. Each meet was counted as a dual no matter how many teams were running. Congratulations to Kelly Egger and Janette Mangus for advancing to the Nationals. Kelly finished 168th out of 192, and Janette finished 49th out of 91.
