Jacques arrives in Canton Oct. 25, and is welcomed by Dean Robert Smolich. From the Republic of Zaire in the heart of Africa, Jacques-Rene Kuyena came to Spoon River College. ln less than a month he had made many friends in the college and in the community. Dr. Reuben Diambomba, his brother-in-law who was a former exchange student at Canton High School, recom- mended that Jacques enroll at SRC to acquire some useful experiences in studying and living in another cultural environment. Jacques, who had studied English for four years, entered American college life with apparent enioyment. He attended business and communications classes, spent hours reading American newspapers and magazines in the Learning Resource Center, increased his formal English vocabulary in the reading lab, and acquired a collection of American idioms and slang phrases from his new college friends. A soccer player in high school, he found it easy to become a basketball fan and rarely missed a game. He attended speech contests, having been active in debate and dramatics in high school, and went to church and cultural events in the Canton area. Adiustment to American college life was not difficult for SRC's only foreign student with one exception - he had his first experience with snow and sub-freezing weather here. His home city, Kinshasa, is not far south of the equator in Africa.
