Both items are permanent reminders of friendships and events, special and commonplace. Only the settings and costumes differ. ln this 1973 edition of the SHIELD, the staff h'as included some reminders of bygone days, called atten- tion to students and staff members who collect antiques, and spotlighted others whose present activities are only modern versions of old pastimes, illustrating the wisdom of the Frenchman who once wrote, The more things change, the more they remain the same. lWest side of Square, Canton, home of Spoon River College, 19733 -'13 if I 'I I- 7? From the Republic of Zaire in the heart of Africa, Jacques-Rene Kuyena came to Spoon River College. ln less than a month he had made many friends in the college and in the community. Dr. Reuben Diambomba, his brother-in-law who was a former exchange student at Canton High School, recom- mended that Jacques enroll at SRC to acquire some useful experiences in studying and living in another cultural environment. Jacques, who had studied English for four years, entered American college life with apparent enioyment. He attended business and communications classes, spent hours reading American newspapers and magazines in the Learning Resource Center, increased his formal English vocabulary in the reading lab, and acquired a collection of American idioms and slang phrases from his new college friends. A soccer player in high school, he found it easy to become a basketball fan and rarely missed a game. He attended speech contests, having been active in debate and dramatics in high school, and went to church and cultural events in the Canton area. Adiustment to American college life was not difficult for SRC's only foreign student with one exception - he had his first experience with snow and sub-freezing weather here. His home city, Kinshasa, is not far south of the equator in Africa. New experiences for SRC's African student lknown here as Jack l included attending basketball games to cheer for the Cru- saders Iaf leffj, tossing his first snowball, and learning about the art of bee-keeping from Warren Potter, director of student ser- vices, as co-student Debbie Dewester looks on. Pederson Governance Planning CARL MCCAUSLAND Through the combined efforts of representatives from the board of trustees, administration, faculty and student body, progress was made toward restructuring the way Spoon River College is to be governed in the future. Bishop, Bradshaw, Balagna A Meeting regularly throughout the year, representatives wrote a constitution which they believe will provide basic prin- ciples of operation in which all SRC participates. Ideally, every group will have a voice and be free to speak with impunity. Carl McCausland, a vo-tech faculty member, served as chairman of the planning group. Dr. J. K. Welch, Board president, addressed the stu- dent body. 1 f KMA, ,I ,V ,sf A 4 ' f f., . 'vu ' ac. I 1 l.......E ' 52: WI Tl What we do today is tomorrow's history. There- fore, this yearbook is a collector's item in a sense because it contains glimpses of life at Spoon River College as it was in 1972-73. With costumes and props we have tried to bring back memories of the past. At the same time we are looking forward to the time when we will move from our temporary campus to our new permanent cam- pus, to life in buildings of modern architectural design. However, let us not forget that like a community or a church, now or in days gone by, a school is made up of different kinds of people. And that is what this, the 12th edition of the SHIELD, is about . . . people. A dozen people with different talents and varied interests have combined their efforts to produce this yearbook. As editor, I wish to thank my staff, the college Student Senate for its support, and Dave Lewis for his professional assistance. Walt Diefendorf Editor 1973 SHIELD . vt'-'HE Q.
