Richmond W. I. Taylor James K. Welch Table Grove C21'11IO1'1 Cuba The college board election held May 18, 1968, gave the Spoon River College a very talented slate of directors. They are Dr. james K. Welch, physician of Cuba, Dr. W. I. Taylor of Can- ton, who was instrumental in the founding of a college for this area, Rev. Lee Reffett, pastor of the Christian Church of Ipava, Mr. Clyde Eaton, an attorney from Havana, Mr. James P. Rich- mond of Table Grove an experienced V.I.T. board member, Mr. Howard K. Leinbaugh of Lewis- town, experienced County Superintendent of Schools, and Mr. Mike Chianakas of Canton, director of Y.M. C.A. activities. Under the leadership of Dean Hearl C. Bishop this group of men chose a new name for our class I junior College. Several names were submitted for consideration, Spoon River, Western Cen- tral, Robert F. Kennedy, Illini College, Western Illinois College, Edgar L. Master, and Hope- well. After careful consideration the title Spoon River College was chosen. 38 Spoon River College Emblem LJ X A Picture symbols were the means of communication before man became learned and sophisticated enough to use letters and numbers. Neither the passage of time nor advances in coummunication has replaced the symbolic picture media as a form of expression. Emblems still provide a beau- tiful and unique method of relating ideas in today's modern world. Spoon River College expresses vividly its philosophy, services, and history in its new emblem. The lamp of learning with the flame providing light or wisdom is the focal point of the emblem and the school. Surrounding the lamp are the service areas through which knowledge is dis- seminated: the mortar board for the college transfer program, the T square and gear symbolic of the technical, vocational programg a stairway personifying continuing educationg and the open book adult education. Encompassing the five symbols is an olive branch wreath--circular because its significance of warmth and friendship on a, person to person basis between faculty and students is the binding attitude which permeates and surrounds the total services provided by this established institu- tion. The background is tri-sectioned representing the three counties of the Spoon River Col- lege District, Fulton, Knox, and Mason. The inception of the original college is designated by the year 1959. Thus, in symbolic pictures, the essence of Spoon River College is communicated and preserved. President Hearl C. Bishop Currently, many major projects at Spoon River College are de- manding the president's time and talent in order that urgent dead- lines can be met. Some of these projects are architectural firm selection, campus visitation, budgeting, long-range planning, screening and selecting new personnel, self -study for North Cen- tral Accreditation, public speaking, and planning building bond ref erendum . Even though our president is very much involved in various activities, he reports that going from one activity to another is an extremely pleasurable experience. 40 n K 5,:.wgiy i gi-fl .' .V ftfffiii5'f'f Man Keep SRC Running 1 X X' - A f i F i I i Ada Edley janet Flynn Evelyn Nord Ruby Rider Secretary-Receptionist Secretary Librarian Assistant Librarian Assistant Cheerleader Sponsor i A Frances Steinkamp Willa Stroman Virginia Vasen Marcia Williams Bookkeeper Book Store Manager Registrar Secretary Q-fe-1+ , M-f Teachers Must Challenge inds Robert AHCIGPSOH Charles Black Jesse Bradshaw Ruth Cagley Civil Engineer Tech. As we look back we recall many major events that will alter the course of our school. Some of the changes that have occurred: The changing of the name of the school, The creation of a new school seal, The change to a university size yearbook, The literary supplement in the school paper, The search for a site for our new campus, And finally, the decision for that site on the jameson property southwest of Canton. It has been an eventful year, and a successful year . We owe our success to many, and we wish to thank them sincerely for all their help and guidance . A special thanks goes to Mrs . K . Doubet, our advisor, Mr. I. Gardner, our year- book consultant, and Mr . R . Foote, our photographer . Thanks also go to our yearbook staff .
