Bishop The realization of our area Class I junior College has been achieved through great cooperative effort by the people. This outstanding accomplishment has given us a juxtaposition with other areas in establishing an educational landmark in the history of our public schools in Illinois. The construction of our area junior College will be remembered as the unprecedented achievement of our times, and our greatest con- tribution for the development and Welfare of our young men and Women. The real significance of our Class I junior College will not be necessarily reflected in statistics, but rather, in the experiences of individual citizens, young and old, Where lives are being molded and shaped by the new educational programs of the school. In addition, many community services may be rendered by the college staff and students participating cooperatively. Today, better jobs are demanding better education, hence, your greatest and most re- warding efforts can be realized through planned educational programs. May your con- tributions be measured by your personal success for the betterment of our society. Klicczejf Board Promotes Class M ZW! is We L. D. Becomes Class On March 2, 1968, a referendum for Canton College to become the Fulton- Mason -Knox area junior college was approved by 772, of the voters. This approval made Canton College a Class I junior College. Eight years ago the Canton district residents voted to es- tablish the present Canton College. For the first 6 years it operated in facilities at the Canton High School. During the past 2 years it has been housed in several buildings in the downtown area. Efforts to get a Class I junior college have been underway since the fall of 1966. More than 40 clubs, organiza- tions, news media, and political groups endorsed the Class I college, as did the Board of Higher Education and the Il- linois junior College Board. The efforts have not been in vain, for Canton Col- lege will become the Spoon River junior College, a Class I junior college. Dean Herald Bishop commented, To me, there can be no better way to com- memorate our Sesquicentennial in the great State of Illinois. It will stand as our greatest contribution to the youth and adult populace of West Central Il- linois . Miss Coty, Chairman of the Class I Tea socializes with the guests. The school of nursing believes that learning is achieved in an atmosphere Where democratic principles of learning are understood and used, and where the group desires to attain a common goal. The students' participation through per- ception and development of ideas is essential to the learning process, of which reasoned values, motivation, and a knowledge of the goals are necessary for achievement. The Canton Community College provides the instruction in the basic sciences for the School of Nursing. Students attend classes at the college for four terms. We have experienced campus life, the lake, Hnals. We have touched other people, other worlds-some deeply. We have created an experiment, a painting, a story. We have established deep ties of friendship. We have grown in knowledge, in experience . . . And this is the place where we all came together. This year has been a significant stage in the expan- sion of Canton Community College. Canton College began the year with a dream to be Class I. This dream was transformed into reality when the Class I proposal passed. The 1968 SHIELD presents a per- manent record of this year of growth. For their con- tinuous hard work we wish to thank Angie Blake, Student Life Editor, Vicki Crank, Academics Editor, joe I-lalford, Sports Editor, Mary Weaver, Class Edi- tor, Joyce Miller, eannie Kurner, Patty Crist, and an J Kathy Anderson. Gur sincerest thanks go to joe Gard- ner, our American Yearbook Consultant, Roger Foote, our photographer, and Mrs. Kathryn Doubet, our advisor, for their expert knowledge and advice. . -'10 ' wi Wdfwcaa gedyrlffanmf iwww l36 Y . ...... 7 Efj y1L,,,, If-f xV w X 1 'V 51 figzflfxy , , gtg!! f-1 .Hg,1if1' i,W,4--- ft ,. .1- w.
