X I X watkins Tobler maker hrliok H8lld!'lCkl Spiro was founded in the fall of 1897, which was about the time, the Kansas City Southern Railroad was being built through this section of the Indian Territory. Spiro is situated, about one mile and one half, west of Skullyville. The name Skullyville, in the Choctaw lndian language, means money-town. Skullyville was the oldest, inland town, in the Indian Territory. The town was named for a Jew's wife, whose maiden name was Spiro. He was one of the first merchants. About 1900, the United States Government had the town site surveyed off in blocks and lots. The first school was established in 1901 and was a private subscription school. The Spiro City Schools in 1946 include the High School, the grade school, vocational agriculture, and combination garage, shop and woodwork buildings. The High School building is of brick, constructed in 1924. It was made to house 6 classrooms, office, music room, and auditorixl. Today, the balcony having been converted into rooms, it has 9 classrooms, office, and auditorium. A hallway has been made into a fairly complete library. The Grade Building, built in 1940 of native stone, :as constructed for 8 classrooms, office, and auditoruim. Today, the grade school has ll classrooms, the auditorium has been made into classrooms. One of these rooms serves as band and music room for both grads and high school pupils. The Garage, a building of brick tile is only two years old. A rather complete garage operated by a full time mechanic, a shop, and a woodworking unit are in this building. Temporarily, the vocational agriculture department is housed in a frame building just back of the High School. le are serving lv school districts with six buses. In Senior High, there are 118 pupils enrolled, in Junior High, 152 are enrolled and 514 elf enrolled in Grade school. D A U S T I I lads, Social Science B A I D Harlan, Veterans Program
