I v, I x TO THE READER: The INDIAN ECHOES staff has done its best to give you a story in pictures of what has taken place in Spirit Lake High School during this past academic year. Our only hope is that you, the reader, will get as much enjoyment from thumbing through these pages as we have had in compiling them. For you, the seniors, this book is the last chapter in your high school record, and for the under- classmen this chapter, though it may not be the final one, is a very important one. Many interesting events have taken place this last year at Spirit Lake High, so we hope you will examine these pages with thought and after reading through once, will read them again and again in years to come. This yearbook is your life, fellow classmates, or at least a very important part of it, P Seniors. . JUNIORS SEE YEAR FILLED WITH FUN, WORK, REWARD You, the Iuniors of Spirit Lake High, were the middle class these past months--upperclassmen pre- paring to take your tum as leaders. You weren't naive enough to be mistaken for sophomores or sophisti- cated enough for seniors. Raising money for the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom was uppermost in your minds. To further your financial condition you sold popcorn at football games, pop, apples and popcorn at basketball games, sponsored a party and sold megaphones. Weeks were spent by the many Juniors preparing for the banquet and prom, which ended the principal school events for another year in the history of the school. Many of you Juniors also participated in the speech events, debate and declamation work. More ac- tivities were band, chorus, and sports. 'M' Milo Armentrout Dianne Ashmore Janice Baker qs? Even though they lacked height in most of their games, they usually overcame it by the agressiveness and determination which they showed at all times. They were dominated mostly by sophomores until Tom Duke and Jim Thore- son were moved up to the varsity squad, Underclassmen were moved up to fill the ga ps and did so very com- petently. The squad had a season record of 15-2. tfllf, x 4lf' 'IBI7 1 H LR 42 'svinlpf 0.-'2'a s'E-E Js 5'a 1' LAK: LA E LAKE tux: 5 i LAM, f5P'Rh 13 AK d LAK! ...Z rlntclwi s! First Sergeant David Houseman, Ronnie Resch, Mattie Rose, Kay Grohe, Marlene I-lagedorn, and Randy Stevenson This year the high school concert did something really different--a four-concert tour. The band, tuider the supervision of Mr. Olson, piled into two Greyhound Buses and went on an all-day tour. A con cert was played at four different towns. They were Ringstead, Britt, Cylinder, and Emmetsburg. Along with four home concerts the band also spent many hours developing their favorite selection-- Sea Portrait for the State Music Contest. A lot of work went into the perfection of the piece which received a Division H rating at the contest. The band has shown spectacular improvement in the past year and owes a lot to Mr. Olson, their in- structor. The great variety of sounds that are heard emitting from the bandroom right around noon are all skillfully united under the hand of Mr. Olson to become a symphony. It is this time of year when spirit runs high and big plans are made all balancing on the victory at the game. This year Sharon Duke was the Homecoming Queen. Her attendants were Aleta Haugland, Carol Peters, Barb Fronk, and Martha Lienemann. The beautiful float that the girls rode on was the Spirit Lake City Float. Home- coming is one of the most exciting events of the year and everyone looks forward to it. L X I . r Calypso rythmn, soft blue lights, the swish of formals,--all of these made the setting for the 1957 Junior-Senior Prom. Palm trees, native servants, hulu dancers, a golden moon, a desert island, and many other things added to the scene of the Calypso Prom. The music was provided by the Don Keonen band and the refreshments were served by calypso waiters. The floor-show was entertainment provided by all classes. It consisted of a calypso ballet. a solo na- tive dancer, a dance team, a marimba solo, and a vocal solo of a calypso song. All these things made the Junior-Senior a finishing touch to a wonderful year and the prom a great success for everybody. 40 if W . .Letter men. . ORGANIZATIONS S ? its EJTHB ISS!
