The director was Physical Education instructor Ioan Williams, Co-director, Joanne Happe, and Student director, Gloria Stinehart. The first recital of the year was a Christmas theme and was held December sixteenth. A solo and a group number were given for the Homecoming party, one number was given for the S.A,C. Christmas program, and a group number was presented to the student body and visitors at a program during National Education Week. The last event of the year was the Spring Recital held on April twenty-eighth. Modern Dance is becoming popular with the surround- ing towns as well as in Spirit Lake. Numbers were presented at the Milford Prom and at different school parties and functions through- out the year. Climaxing the second team season was the Dickinson County Basket- ball Tournament held in the Spirit Lake High School Gym. Our Second Team went into the tournament as an underdog against varsity teams of the rest of the county. They surprised everyone by being the first Spirit Lake Second Team to reach the tournament finals in many years. There they bowed to the highly rated Arnolds Park five. Speakers at the banquet were: Junior Class President, Dorothy Shelledyg Senior Class President, Shelby Jonesp Junior, Richard DeRousseg Superintendentg Gay Orr, and School Board President, George Jeck. Tables were decorated with baby orchids flown from Hawaii. Entertainment for thebanquet was furnished by the Nubbins a barber shop quartet. The gymnasium was decorated to carry out the above theme. The bandstand was a thatched hut, there were murals along the west side, imitation pools with fish in them, and palm trees waving in the breeze . The floor show featured Suzie Sylvester and Donny Reddel in their own original presentation of I-Ioneybun from South Pacific, Dorothy Jeck doing ahula dance to Little Brown Gal , and Jeanette Roggenburg and her accordian. Seniors sang Dear Old Spirit Lake to open the pro- gram, followed by a welcome by President Shelby Jones. The first recipients of the Arion awards were announced by Lorimer Olson and Dean Simpson. The awards are offered through the sponsorship of the Rotary and Kiwanis clubs. Plaques, bearing the names of the winners will be displayed at the school. Agriculture department awards were made by instructor Leonard Stranskey, TheDeKalb award totheoutstanding senior went to Harold Fronk. Athletic awards were presented to the track squad mem- bers by Coach John Webb.
