Jobe, memberg and Buryl Hughes, Vice-President, plan ahead to build a better school for Sperry. .4 WE BELIEVE . . . in the policies of our board of education. We think that we have the finest mem- bers anywhere . . . always reaching out for greater improvements . . . better facilities . . . and higher standards . We believe . . . our faculty has guided us through our high school yea rs and led us out of the shadows of ignorance into the light of knowledge and exper- ience. The faculty of SHS is ever ready to lend un- derstanding and encou ragement to any student. ing an air of friendliness in our school . . . talked with us about serious matters . . . joked with us when it wouldn't interfere with class routine . . . and taught us the reason for discipline. We all owe a vote of thanks to our fine teachers . . . for being friendly, courteous, kind, sympathe- tic, forceful, and all of the other qualities that it takes to make a good teacher. We offer a very special thanks to our friendly and helpful annual sponsor, Mrs. Etta Simerly. She has become a lasting and valuable friend to every member of the staff. Without her the problems we faced could not have been mastered. Thank you, Sperry faculty, for helping us on to a better life . . . to know what problems we will be facing in the world . . . to be able to look at those problems with the knowledge that we have been pre- pared. WE BELIEVE . . . in generous comradeship. Sperry High School means books, assignments, tests and grade cards. But it also means dates, dances, parties, elections, queens, corsages, and never-to- be forgotten friendships. ln addition to learning about the Constitution, students learn the art of get- ting along with others, a skill they will always need long after they have forgotten the verbs in grammar and the formulas in math. We Believe . . . in loyalty to our high school, which has furnished us with fun, excitement, and knowledge that will help us in our future lives. Loyalty that means working hard to support our class's candidates and practicing long hours to make our class play the best. We have all had experiences during our school days that will remain with us throughout the com- ing years. Experiences that will help to mold our lives . . . to guide us in whatever course we may choose . . . to become better citizens in this great country of ours . Long after we have left our school we will recall the things we've done . . . the places we've been . . . and the people we've met. As we walk across the stage during our gradu- ation exercise, thoughts will flash through our minds of our high school years, the talent show that we worked so hard on . . . the junior and sen- ior banquet . . . and the 90 in bookkeeping. Another high point to be added to our storehouse of mem- ories will be when we walk across the stage in our caps and gowns to receive our diplomas on that long awaited night. The organizations and activities in which we participated so free from care will leave many memories with us. No one could ever forget the many good times we've had, but in the midst of a banquet, one is likely to forget the long hours of drudg- ery and decorating necessary in the preparation Who can remember the weary hours of planning and work while he is watching an entertaining assembly? Organizations and activities play a vital part in life at SHS . More important than adding to the enjoyment of the entire stu- dent body, organizations and activities furnish the means of training our future leaders and citizens. Style shows and parties . . . teen-town and music festivals . . . school paper and year- book . . . These are all important to our edu- cation. Loyal support must be given in every undertaking. We believe that this support is best described in our school pledge, which is always said at the beginning of every assembly by both students and teachers. l pledge myself and my support to the Sperry junior and Senior High School and all for which they stand . . . loyalty, honesty, good sportsmanship, better character, and all other high ideals. Every student of SHS thrills to see the band marching along to the strains of the Pirate fight song . . . feels the excitement when a basketball swishes through the net . . . experiences the heartbreaks of losing in the final seconds . . . remembers the mornings of hoarse throats after a basketball game . . . shouts as another player com- pletes a home run . . . jumps a little as the starter's gun sounds . . . recalls the mounting tension of the Barnsdall or homecoming game . . . cheers madly when the football sails between the crossbars . . . remembers singing loudly on the long bus trip to out of town games . . . feels a wave of humbleness as the national anthem is played in the darkness before the game. We shall remember that the practice of good sportsmanship is but one of the traditions upheld with pride by every student of SHS . In time the scores of the games that have been played and the cheers that we have shouted will be merely memories in our minds, but we shall always recall the friendly faces and the good times at Sperry High School.
