Specifically this entails the operation, care and maintenance of the ship's main propulsion plant, electric power plant, auxiliary machinery, piping systems, and interior communications systems, the control of damage, and repairs to the ship's hull. In addition, the Engineering Department is responsible for the repairs to material and equipment which are beyond the capacity of the personnel or equipment in other departments but within the capacity of the Engineering Department. The Electrical Division is responsible for the power generation, distribution and load maintenance of all electrical equipment on SPERRY. Personnel in E Division are from the electricians mate or interior communications electricians ratings. Since the plant is very large, the division is divided into four groups or gangs. Main Power maintains the main propulsion and main propulsion auxiliaries. Auxiliary Power takes care of the general power distribution and lighting circuits throughout the ship. The Battery Shop is assigned the tasks of maintaining the electrical system of SPERRY's small boats, changing and testing portable lanterns and conducting electrical safety checks on portable equipment. The Interior Commu- nications personnel are responsible for the telephone systems, all interior communications equipment, and the ship's master gyro. Damage Control Division is separated into three work centers-the DC Overhaul, DC Hull Technician and Boat Shops-whose main tasks include maintenance of the watertight integrity of the ship as well as its small boats and deck machinery. More specifically these shops are responsible for maintaining repair lockers, doors and hatches, firefighting equipment, the tiremain and ventilation systems, the ship's heads and washro0mS plus basic hull repair and general sheet metal and pipe work within the ship. M and A Division is a dual responsibility. M Division is responsible for the propulsion of SPERRY. Propulsion is accomplished through the use of diesel electric combination. Utilizing eight main diesel engines and two propulsion motors, SPERRY can make 17 knots. A Division is responsible for all aux- iliary equipment such as galley, laundry, air conditioning, refrigeration, oxygen, nitrogen, boilers, water distilation, elevators, and steering gear. 87 ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
