In contrast to the medical services offered some thirty years ago, the USS SPERRY Medical Depart- ment has the facilities to provide the latest up-to-date laboratory tests available, full X-ray services, a complete modern-day ship's Pharmacy and a well equipped Treatment Room to handle any medical emer- gency. Ancillary services available include full physical examinations, including electrocardiograms, diving examinations and prescription lenses. To meet the challenge of the modern Navy, the SPERRY Medical Department also has a comprehensive Radiological Health protection program and the capability to Air Evac patients requiring further medical treatment during deployments. Sick Call still goes down at the appointed time and emergency cases are treated at anytime, but methods and types of treatment have improved, increasing the capabilities of the USS SPERRY since those early days. Care and treatment of the sick and injured is still the basic 'goal of the SPERRY Medical Department. Although three decades have passed and many changes have occurred, Sickbay is still the same haven for the present ship's company as it has been in the past. M. S. BARBER LTJMCJ, U. S. N. Medical Officer Dentistry has changed considerably in the last thirty years. The old philosophy of drill and till or extract and replace is ro longer with us. Instead, with the use of fluorides and preventive dentistry measures, we can see the possibility of the defeat' of dental disease. The new effort, plaque control, may be the solution to your dental worries. Come visit our disease control center and leam how you can defeat dental disease. I ' , The Dental Department provides dental care for personnel of the USS SPERRY, for ships tended, and for such other personnel as may be authorized to receive dental treatment, and to provide instruction in-'oral hygiene for such personnel. The Dental Department accomplishes necessary dental examinations of individuals to determine their dental qualifications to meet certain physical standards. ' 1 The Dental Department functions as a component of the Medical Departmentlduring General Quarters or other emergency conditions. In this capacity, the Dental.
