' x i . - U - . X l A A umn Qi The USS SPERRY CAS 121 was originally designed to support one torpedo, the MK14 Mod 3. At present the SPERRY maintains four types of Submarine weapons, the MK 14 Mod 5, the MK 37 Mods 2 and 3, the MK 45 Mods 1 and 2, and the MK 2,3 guided missile. Soon another submarine weapon will be added to SPERRY's inventory, the MK 48 Mod 1. In addition to the above listed weapons, SPERRY, in her career, has maintained the MK 16, the MK 23, the MK 27, and the MK 28 torpedo. The latter three are now retired from service. To maintain these complex submarine weapons sixty highly trained torpedomen are assigned to the Weapons Repair Department. Each torpedoman has an average of thirty three weeks of schooling which gives them the capability to overhaul, test and maintain the weapons in SPERRY's inventory. ..To ensure the Weapons Repair Department maintains the skills and training necessary to provide reliable weapons to the tended submarines, four inspections per year are conducted by outside activities. Additionally, a quality assurance program and on the job training are always in effect. SPERRY's Weapons Repair Department recieves and issues approximately one hundred and fifty warshot torpedoes per year and approximately fifty exercise torpedoes. In addition to the Weapons Repair Departmentls responsibility for torpedo maintenance is the requirement for test, grooming, and upgrading of the Torpedo Fire Control Systems aboard submarines tended. Eighteen Fire Control Technicians are assigned to test, repair and ORDALT as required the MK 101 106, and 113 Fire Control Systems. These skilled technicians additionally repair and calibrate many of the test equipments used in SPERRY's weapons preparation shops. i The conventional Weapons Repair Division fSpecial Weapons, W-lj is the largest of the three Weapons Repair Department Divisions. It is comprised of sixty torpedo technicians with varied backgrounds and training, maintaining torpedoes of Submarine Squadron THREE in a perpetual state of readiness. They are responsible for maintenance, repair, stowage and handling of both warshot and exercise configured weapons. The Fire Control. Shop QW-2 Divisionj is responsible for intermediate level repair, calibration, and maintenance of the fire control systems of submarines assigned to Submarine Squadron THREE. Fire Control Systems normally services the MK 101, MK 106, and MKll3. The W-3 Division, designated SW-ASTORXSUBROC, is the smallest of the three Weapons Repair Department Divisions. It has the capability of maintaining, repairing, storing, and handling the MK 45 Mods 1 and 2 Warshot and exercise configured torpedoes and the MK 23 SUBRGC Missile. 63 WEAPONS DEPARTMENT
