ft A ' i X , Thirty years ago a ship was commissioned. lt was a large conglomeration of cold steel named the United States Ship SPERRY. Since that time tens of thousands of officers and men have established the tra- ditions and reputation of SPERRY. They were men who did their job as they saw it. They were men who did impossible things as others saw it. There were great men, small men, but they all added up to the crews of the USS SPERRY who kept their submarines on the line. They continued to do their job in war and peace allowing our submarines to continue their outstanding contribution to our nation. It is very difficult sometimes not to be on the fighting line, not to be in the forward area, not to see other countries, not to be underway sailing for distant shores and adventureg but the officers and men of SPERRY have been on those distant shores and in those foreign seas just as surely as if they were physically present on their brood of fighting submarines. We can all hold our head up high when we see the accomplishments of our fellow navy- men and submariners and realize that without us to succor and support them they would be unable to operate in their 'magnificent fashion. The motto of SPERRY could well be, we donit have to be fancy to live up to tradition, we just have to know how to fix things, and how to keep on fighting. The unequalled response of the officers and men of SPERRY over the years and through this thirtieth birthday has been tremendous. The inventiveness, the inginuity, the dedication and just plain hard work of the men of the SPERRY leaves nothing to be desired and is reflected in the history of their performance. No one knows what the future of SPERRY is to be, but certainly it will continue to reflect the proud glory of her past and the undaunted spirit of her future. M. C. SCOGGINS Captain, U. S. N.
